You have hit the nail on the head, a rebuild is going to cost a couple of thousand,
The conversion I could do realistically for 1200 by the time I've sold bits I no longer need!!
As for shells, why these need replacing??
Water hasn't contaminated the oil!!!
And as for buying damaged cars, I've had plenty of damaged recorded cars in the past, the cars have been just as good as the cars I've had without any accident damage, in some respects its a good thing knowing the history of the car!! All those hundreds of unrecorded damaged floating on the market.
The prob is an engine goes like this it practically writes the cars off anyway, so I'm not the first and certainly not the last to be in this position!!

Chap, the car is worth very little. Even if the engine hadn't **** itself it still wouldn't be worth much. The cat d kills it regardless of how good the repair work is. The paint looks completely missmatched too from the pics which again doesnt do it any favours. No doubt the side that wasnt repaired is showing its age with the usual rust creeping through.
Get it gone for whatever you can get and cut your losses, its not a great car. Or if you have the time and room then break it, you'll claw back a few extra quid that way.

If you've got the space and time to do it properly then its worth doing, but, in most cases its far more sensible to take the hit and get it gone as a whole.
Advertise it, be honest and open and im sure someone will come along with £600/£700. Its an original STI afterall, not a great one but hey, its a few hundred quid isn't it.

I'm very familiar with the painstaking steps of breaking a car, did my skyline on my drive was awful lol
Well ill see what offers come in, I may even try and swap it for a rolling shell of some description and go back to rwd,
Will see if any genuine offers come in I guess, and sit on it for the meantime

My 2p worth.
If you can be ar$ed, break it, you'll get close to £2k maybe more, but it will take time.
Or buy a newage sti bottom end for anywhere between 500/1000 and you'll be good to go for 450 bhp, but you need to be half decent with spanners, which it sounds like you are, iv'e rebuilt one and it's not too difficult, especially if all your doing is bolting on a new bottom end, but it will cost another ish £600 in gaskets and ancillaries, pumps, belts,oil etc.
The car it's self as it stands is not worth much because we all want to get paid for our time and potential buyers want an earner, so personally i'd give £600 tops.
They are good cars when you get them running right and can't be beaten on bang for buck.

Well having just sold a very similar car I think maybe I could help a little (And not being too far from you either Munnsy lol).
My Silver 1994 WRX sold for £1600. I was very very lucky to find a seller willing to pay what I would consider to be over the market value for mine. The chap drove 300 miles and paid cash, no arguements.
But mine ran and had no major issues and wasn't accident damaged. (Pictures are on my project thread).
The first thing I'd say to do is establish what it is. If its a pre 95 then its likely to have a CDB, which is worth more than the later ODB (Cross hatchings under the alternator will show you what you have). CDB's are used in a lot of big power builds.
And is it an STI? No offence mate but a lot of early WRX's are passed off as STI's.
Also what its worth to me is different to what its worth to you, as shown by the buyer of my WRX. 4 door shells arent worth £1 at the moment. For someone to buy it then they'd either be looking to scrap/break or race prep it, both require some knowledge and time, breaking I don't see being profitable on an early WRX/STI.

It's 100% an sti as I cross referenced everything so I'm no expert but I'm positive it is a genuine sti.
I also found its Not an CDB, as is actually late 95 early 96 registration and like you say is missing the hatching marks.
The rest of the car I personally think is fairly tidy, everything works, feels tight but does need work on the paint to get it up to scratch.
I could break it for spares but its advertising, I'm confident with a spanner for sure but bolting together a newage bottom end etc to handle the power is just the start of it, I'm then into te Rhelms of gearbox 6 speed conversion for my power goals and before you know it the figure is best part of 2000
Hence my rb25 conversion idea.
But your all correct I will never get the money back, unless I break it for spares in the long run once I've enjoyed the conversion etc.
On pepper it's a no brainer, strip for bits but real time we all know its not that simple I guess

The problem you have is its a prefaclift and I take it it has the original interior?
That makes the interior worth very little, if it has two pot front brakes they are worth little as well. I would imagine you would be doing well to get 1500 for it in parts.

Personally I'd look into something like these...

The good thing with the gearbox is that some people have the same and run decent power through it and if it still works you'll be able to re sell it. If you limit the car for now and go six speed eventually then jobs a good-un.
For £350 though you can get it back on the road.

You gotta decide mate what your long term intentions are mate 1st of. If you think your only going to keep it as a weekend car then theres only one option mate. Big power conversion as ill guarentee you, you will never sell up. Ok so its a cat d, while in the process of getting your engine conversion done, how about taking it to a decent garage to get them to repair it and respray it. Yea its gonna set you back £10,000 or so buy the time its completed, buy you'll have a decent 450bhp classic sti

If your only going to use the car for daily use n not intending on keeping it long term, then you gotta decide how quick you want shot of it. As they say time is of the essence.
Sell it as a whole £500-£700 but its gone.
Break it £1000-£1500 but its the headache of storing it n spending time to strip it down
Me personally i know what way id be going, hence why mines being declared of road bud
