**** i've even had to resort to Google for that one
All good
Don't start on the capitalisation of i, it's something i tend to just ignore these days, it's been done to death about twenty times now, long with my explanations and justifications. Bottom line, find me a keyboard with a single stroke capital i and i might try using it

i appreciate my input may not be even read lol, and this is ne of those threads where - id often comment "if youve nothing constructive" then just dont read the thread or comment on it.
a few points - firstly as many will know im not great with spelling or grammar, mostly because its not high on my list of priorities when using written language to communicate - added to my relatively poor typing skills. However im confident each post i make is understandable to any reader - and not beyond anyones ability to understand- even full of spelling or grammar errors.
things i think are important are ease of reading for the person - to me, paragraphs. use them fairly often to break up the reading - but not even necessarily when a subject is changed although often useful at these times. but small regular paragraphs are far more likely to entice me into reading maybe a lengthy post.
secondly - i beleive in the evolution of language, its constantly happengin and will continue to do so, there is nothing that can stop it. im willing to accept it, maybe not encourage or use certain forms - but i wouldnt protest against it, as its interesting to see - to a point "awrite bruv, happnin m8" is not what i mean by this.
thirdly i appreciate its important to some people. they seek enjoyment from making the effort they put in, and the knowledge they have. they wold like to see more of it and think it is important - entitled to there opinion, but not to push it on everyone.
lastly - the grammar, spelling police are just not needed, as a sole purpose for replying in a thread its plain stupid - although running jokes and comical comments in jest are encouraged as part of banter, belittling, putting down, aggressive or just plain not nice
;( comments that are serious are not needed.
its often clearly used as a chance to portray ones intelligence being grater than anothers, or a marker of someones social class, and used to make some feel superior - thats the saddest thing of all.
very lastly im glad there are forums ect for thngs like this, its not a bad thing to discuss language, punctation, grammar ect - it can help teach those that are interested, and is a decent topic for discussion
and yes im fully aware this post is totally riddled with all sorts of errors, those that feel the need can tear it to grammatical peices if they feel the need. i make no apologies for it, i just dont have the time or feel its necessary to go back through the whole post, just for an internet forum- no disrespect

Being serious while the purists (and that includes me to an extent) would say your post ignores a lot of the punctuation rules of the language reading what you write it is clear to me that you are articulate and maybe your lack of punctuation is down more to laziness than anything else. The point is I can read what you are saying and what you are saying is well thought out and reasoned.
I think I am at my worst with grammar correction when the person commitng the offence is doing so whilst arguing a point with me that I find totally unreasonable. For instance I generally find those making borderline racist or homophobic statments tend to be to some extent illiterate or inarticulate and hence I am guilty of using that as a way to attack them. Not very fair I guess, but calling them a **** is banned so I guess I use what I have at my disposal.
What I do take issue with is the bit about language evolution. While I am all for it and it is obvious that it happens to all modern languages over time I do not think writing in such a way as to make what you are saying less clear is classed as evolution... quite the opposite in fact.
Text speak or a lack of punctuation is not in my book evolution, just my opinion and one I am entitled to.
I also happen to think the English language is one of the greatest things we have given to this world and can also be a very beautiful thing when well constructed and as such I don't wnat to see it disappear into something less defined.
Just my two pence worth!

Jef i didn't see that post, completely passed me by, apologies. It's a reasonable and balanced viewpoint. Speaking personally, i try, i really do try, to limit my pull-ups, i'm not stupid and realise the negative effect they usually have. If i had a quid for every time i saw Subarus typed as Subaru's on here i'd have tens of thousands of pounds in my pocket, and that's a level of English i'd expect a 10 year old to have.
Everyone gets things wrong, some grammar rules are open to debate and interpretation, that's the beauty of a language. But when i see genuinely basic errors, it just pushes all the wrong buttons. Anyone can take 10 minutes out of their life to learn the difference between there and their, if they weren't interested at school. It makes a huuuge difference to the overall validity of any input, in my opinion.
Sometimes i wish i could be as indifferent to basic spelling errors as the majority of people, unfortunately that's just not how i'm built. I do however try to comment only when it's in the spirit of the thread rather than berating somebody for the sake of it.

fi fan, your almost spot on in regard to me. here we go....
it all started at school, when learning in class be it maths, english or any subject, i had friends i was "competing against" it was a healthy friendly rivalry - but quite important, so we both scribbled words down, anticiapted words so we could get the edge over the other - as a consequence my handwriting is nothing short of appauling - i write in capital letters now - and it truly amazes me how beautiful some peoples hand writing can be!
some is so artistic and a try thing to be in amazment of - but that would horrify me in my task - ive always tried to do things as very physically fast as possible. this explains my lack orf punctuation or correct spelling/grammar. And also probably why its not that important to me. the truth is my education on such matters is likely less than it should be - but again as i take the veiw i do on language - id dont feel any sense of activley trying to learn - although beleive it or not from just posting on here i have learned a thing or two about spelling, grammar, punctuation!
so thanks to the moany ***** lol - obviously far from perfect but ive noticed a tiny improvement in probably spelling mostly.
and seen as speed and getting my point down quickly is my personal top aim - i almost never spell check, never mind grammar check ect.
now its a different ballgame come me writing a document or something official or important - i still speed write my thoughts, but then i will take the time to go back, proof read, grammar and spell check, until i feel its perfect. I do this with any presentations i may have to prepair, on nutrition, excersise, phased horizontal evacuation ect ect.
dont know if you picked me up wrong, the likes of "awrite bruv, happnin m8" is not the kind of language evolution i would promote, infact id activley go against that if some one claimed it was evolution. Its more other examples i can accept and kindof admire at times - none of which i can think of just now lol.
as for using grammar correction, ect as a weapon against someone you consider a tool - fair game imo
im just lucky im that clever i never need to use that tool as im quite the intelect

Yeah fair comment on the langugae evolution, apologies as I had you wrong there. I can't abide text speak in a forum or the likes.... just the way I feel about it.
As for the intellect comment what are you saying exactly? I know I should debate properly with these people, but sometimes it's easier just to pick on them over something else as often trying to debate with them is a bit like trying to swim through quicksand

And this, Jef, epitomises my point. In a nutshell. Your and you're. Two words that mean completely different things, but unfortunately just happen to sound and look similar.
You are, you're. You are almost spot on, you're almost spot on. If you could get to grips with that i swear to you your posts would be elevated exponentially. It really would be 10 minutes very, very well spent. I mean it.

now thats obviously my veiwpoint because i really actually dont know the correct meanings or the correct context in which each is correct. It isnt important enough an error for me to feel the need to learn it - and again for me the speed at which i can get my point or post down overrides the need i feel to get the use spot on.
and i do understand how it could annoy others as it seems i just cant be fcked learning them - but truth be known ive always had a bit of a problem with that word and its uses - its never been very easy for me to pick up correctly for some reason - again re-inforcing my veiw that i dont really need to. There are aother similar words i have always had trouble getting absolutely correct - but again its maybe just my excuse for my reasoning in such debates.
ultimately for me, its the speed at which i can get my point down and across that matters most to me - and i certainly have no problem forgiving other posters who appear to be the same - aslong as i understand clearly the point trying to be made, thats enough for me, and just means we can get on with the discussion in hand rather than bicker about whos spelling or puncuation is correct - wasting valuable debating time lol.
hope tha kindof clears up my stance on things

Some great posts here.
I made this thread to show you that there are some very serious grammar police out there, along with examples of poor signwriting in the public domain.
I hope that I don't come across as a grammar policeman on the forum, I do have a dislike for text speak on forums, to me it's just rude of the writer to assume that everyone understands what has been written. I find that posts with text speak distract me from the subject because I am trying to interpret what has been presented in front of me.
I also have a sense of humour and would love to join in some of the banter, but feel that I am still a bit of an outsider and might get taken too seriously.
I also can't type fast to save my life, 2 digits, sometimes three, so by the time I've written a reply the thread will have moved on

i, i..., feel so much love coming my way, i may just go have a "pokey bum ****" as a reward to myself for being so great! lol
id limited myself to just 1 per week, but i feel this deserves a celebratory extra "PBW"
and tel the your, and you're, you are is something i do get, but admittadly its likely lazyness that results in what i write - so!! remove !1 pokey bum ****" go staright to bed.
oh well almost a perfect day 1

i dont really advocate text speak, on forums, its fines for actually texting. i can forgive the occasional slip on a forum, and even the lack of grammar, and spelling as long as i get the point being made.
but anything with "bruv" or numbers as part of words is not what id call acceptable text. dont worry about picking up mis-spellers - as long as theres a clear comical tone to comments - i think its fine.

I suppose a bit of text speak is understandable to me, it just takes me too long to decipher and understand so I just move on, even though what's being written might be an important part of the debate.
It's an age thing

i think telboys text is just an attempt at encouragement for me, as i agree - if taken literally (which i dont) you could interpret that as abit judgemental.
but i know tel isnt really that shallow most of the time anyway lol
oldun, your lucky youve got age as an excuse for anything you so desire - even unpopular opinions - so post away lol.
but seriously its only very very occassionaly you get a poster here who uses pure unadulterated text speak - and the "police then jump into punish them accordingly" lol, its usually a new memeber who is trying to portray themselves as some kind of gangster - and thankfully even though this is a forum about a car with a certain stigma attached - the occurancies are rare. so its worth sticking with it, and just taking a deep breath, "remebering the war" and keep contributing,
