That's what I mean. When I used to do pro photography I tried Nikons and Canons at a camera show for a day and that helped me make a choice about which camera to go for. Obviously spec was important, but you need to feel at one with the camera too.

They lost my custom when they stopped trading in your old equipment.

I used to buy heaps from them and traded up regularly.

When they decided to get out of that market it was a big nail in the coffin.

Would be like a garage not taking in part ex !

Maybe this is a bit unusual but...

The local independent chain of electrical stores I mentioned - extremely good on price and will match most prices and deliver the next day AND install if needed.

The local bike shop - 10% off everything for regular customers/bike club members and some great advice available (I do buy on-line from the big names sometimes but almost all email enquiries have been answered by a halfwit), the local bookshop isn't as cheap as on-line but they know EVERYTHING about books and literature, etc.

And buying locally for food (we try and buy as few imports as possible) means less "food miles" and a bit of local support and usually nicer products.

Clothes - I like to try stuff on, so does the missus so we buy from local shops.

I just don't "buy" this obsession with price alone. IMO the complete picture favours the independents - service, knowledge, delivery, etc.

I'm not buying from Amazon any more (I did for a while) because I think their ethics suck. So I do the opposite of many - check Amazon'd reviews, buy locally if I can.

Now one area not so easy is cars - they are useless down here!

Last local buy was the Jimny (!). After that it's been Leicester for the BM, Croydon for the Landy (NEVER again; the main dealer was a near crook), Preston for the California (VW not Ferrari!) and I'm discussing the M135i with Sytners up North again. Dealers down here don't seem to know a thing about them!

Where has all this "price only" selfish cr4p got us? Supermarkets that dump all over their suppliers from a great height and import far too much, the biggest on-line retailer dodging tax and making up their own rules as they go along, UK farming on it's knees in many areas, manufacturing completely up the spout (virtually ALL investment in the UK economy should be in manufacturing and infrastructure, not propping up the crooks called bankers) and a HUGE national debt.

A race to the bottom on price becomes a race to the bottom on quality.

Looks like I'm Fecked then.

I paid them £529 with a mixture of vouchers and cash on the 27th December for a Samsung NX1000 with extra zoom lens which had to be ordered and would take "Up to 28 days to arrive"

Went in on Wednesday when news of them being in trouble broke to be assured that they'd all be ok and the camera would eventually arrive.....Now today the shops are all shut and I can't even go in to get goods to the value of what I've paid

Price Waterhouse Cooper say you can put in a claim to obtain a potential refund but don't hold your breath

Justseen on the news, if you bought gift vouchers using a debit card,

The cardholder should contact there bank to get a what i believe is a buy back .

But you need to be quick, as theres only limited time you can do this.

I nearly bought a tripod on Thursday from them,

I was planning to go back every day, to see when the reductions will start.

Looks like that one is blown out of the window then.

Cheers for that Mart

The vouchers I used (£250) were a Christmas present, and the rest I paid cash so pretty much fecked really.

I've filled out the claim form to send to Price Waterhouse to attempt to claim the monies back. I'm not holding my breath though

I'll admit i do quite a bit of online buying but i'll still mainly go to stores like Richer sounds for Hi-fi or tv,i won't use the richer in the city centre though, because i can't be hassled with parking and its effing one way streets. You got to do a tour of the city just to get to where you need to be,so i'll go the store in the next local town, relative easy parking, and you can get straight to it.Public transport is just a big NO for me.
Clothes will always be an item i'll go out to shop for,Maplins is a store i'll go too.People are lazy now a days and want it on the doorstep,or is with the age of internet and online shopping, its made us lazy,or we no longer have to go out of way to shop for something.
As for jessops didn't know they were still about, its all good having your independents, but unless people know you're about, its not doing much good is it.

What a stupid statement. Do you not realise that the above items are essential. Without them you would be classed as living below the poverty line.

Shops will only exist for stuff not worth ordering online, for pensioners/non net savvy, recreational shopping etc, its like broadcast tv, that is changing to the on demand model, we only put up with that as that was all the technology could do, like we only put up with huge CRT tellies as thats all that could be made, these things have been superceded and there will be a similar transition in the high street, there will always be room for small local shops and big supermarkets but it is the middle ground specialist stuff that suffers, or like Woolworths who I used to work for.
Very true. I order alot of stuff online and most of the time its a lot cheaper than retail and less hassle.

I think clothing retail will always exist since ordering clothes online is always difficult what with sizing and fitting etc
I very rarely buy clothes online and you have to try it on, what looks good in pictures may not look good on me.

Funnily enough I was at Jessops last week after a Sony Cyber-shot WX100 for the other half, and the guy told me they were out of stock and to try again this Saturday as they might have new stock delivered.

Unless the debit card thing works out you will be lucky to see anything and even if you do it will be no more than 10% of what they owe you. Sorry to be downbeat, but that's the reality.

PWC will of course get paid an enormous amount of money for their 'genius' and then there will be first in line creditors (usually banks and the likes) and then the 'plebs' - small business, one man bands and customers.

Takes the P1ss it really does.

In my mind they have taken over £800k in outstanding sales owed to voucher sales and uncompleted orders and pretty much written it off. Giving the big \/ to everybody.

That has to be unlawful ?? Will the goverment step in to help out like they did with the banks ?? Will it F U C K

I know one thing now, I will never pre-order or pay a deposit to a retail shop ever again.
If I can't buy it there and then, I will do without it.
The chances of losing your money seem very high after this spate of closures.

Chargeback and/or Section 75 gives you some protection on that front.

That said, I'm not sure I'd give gift vouchers as presents any more and I'd certainly spend any I receive sharpish. I'd wouldn't be sitting on HMV vouchers right now!

Put the deposit on a credit card, then. It seems to have become fashionable to bash credit cards for irresponsible lending, but if you pay them off every month, it's free protection. I pay for everything I can using a cashback card these days, there's just no downside.

Gift vouchers... just like money, only not as good.

I've never understood them. Why is it "OK" to give someone, say, a £10 voucher that costs £10 and is worth £10 to the recipient (but with strings attached), but less "OK" to give someone £10?

The perception of effort perhaps? A voucher from a high street shop at least means the buyer has been out the house to get it

I'll second that. I used to trade in and trade up at Jessop. Maybe it didn't make money? You used to be able to contact them and they would search all the shops nationwide for a requested 2nd hand item which could then be transferred to your local store for you. Was a good service.

The 'high Street' is merely a shop window these days....

Mind you the 'buy anything' power of the internet is amazing.... I only thought that the other day...

In the last few days i have bought online:

A dyson DC01 wand hose (a 14yr old vacuum)
A dyson DC01 stair tool (different supplier)
2 moshi monster books (one only released this week)
A copy module for a HP 9500 mfp printer
10 avaya telephone handset curly cords
A upgraded battery for my syma toy helipcopter.

How many of those things would i have been able to buy in my local high street?
None.... Not now, not ever, even in the past....

Retail is changing, and the high street is struggling to adapt.
