Phone your provider and ask if they can come check yur meter as yur alone and nothing has changed.

Well, I rang them and I've had it all explained. This bill wasnt unusually high......my last one was unusually low The guy I spoke to (who was really helpful and explained everything very well) went back 3 years and my average quarterly usage has always been around 1200 to 1400 units but the july august september period is always freakishly low So whatever I do different then, I need to do all year round Very strange.

 

We're supposedly expecting -10 degrees this weekend. I'll probably still not have my heating on

No, heating isn't an issue. I don't use it much in the winter. Also, the quarter before which is april, may and june was higher than my last quarter. Very odd.

Mine averaged about £130 a quarter for electric over the winter months.
I don't use many appliances and always have the lights off but my apartment was first floor with nothing below, end of the block and quite large rooms with floor to ceiling windows and balcony doors and the heating was all electric, no gas.
During the summer it was £93 a quarter but I had a old 42" plasma with an amp (and sky box) on all day long.

Well I also put a reading in within 2 weeks of my last bill, just to get an idea what it'll be and apparently if a reading is submitted within 2 weeks of a due bill, that's the reading they go off. In other words, instead of my last bill being over 91 days it was for 77....and therefore this bill was for 105!

 

My heating costs about 5 litres of petrol for the chain saw.

And my electric was about £250 for the year last year.

 

I would be inclined to ask them to explain and justify the enormous increase in your bill,and send them a meter reading while you are at it.

DYK, that's what I use. Card for the gas and token for the electric. Through Southern Electric for both, they charge the same rate per unit as they would for a quarterly bill. You only save 5% by being direct debit, which seems hit and miss. Plus due to my credit score being krapp, they refused me the opportunity for direct debit as you apparently need a credit check to do this method. As I can't find a supplier who'll beat their prices (looking on the comparison websites for unit consumption), I've never seen the bother to move.

 

Npower have just lowered our monthly bill to £90 for a largish 4 bed detached, we have got wall insulation and solar panels though which help a lot.

 

I like smartcard you can keep track of what you used and only pay for what you use,direct debit they taken about £600.00 more than they should of,i said get fooked and i moved to smartcard,at least this way i'm in control of it...

I input a meter reading every month onto the npower website and to be fair to them I have had no problems at all.

 

DYK, I can never understand why people blame companies for taking out increasing amounts from customers bank accounts. It's on par with people saying they are, for example, £290 in credit thinking that is good!

Okay, it isn't right increasing the amount withdrawn without good reason, and there often isn't except trying it on, but why don't customers take charge of their own money? It isn't difficult to understand how much money is required to cover gas and electricity if people looked at their bills. A quick phone call and that figure is what you tell them is fair, job done. It can be amended at any time by yourself, up or down.

Ultimately the money is yours to look after not to allow a utility company to badly manage it then complain.

I often move to different energy suppliers, by using comparison sites.

I'm currently with EDF and, after the first year, THEY have reduced my DD from £49.50 pcm (electric only; no gas supply to my flat) to £40 -- based on my first annual pattern of average monthly usage.

So they (well, EDF anyways) do correctly monitor usage and amend as necessary - whether up or down.
