My opinion, which has seen both sides - the police force has a lot of good people who work really hard doing a very diverse job. They also have a lot of people who like to hide away in an office moaning about everything. There are a lot of moaners in the police.

Does that mean they deserve a pay cut, not really.

But like I said - its an in demand job. People fight over the jobs. There is no way the govt will sit back and let this carry on - they will identify the jobs where there is high demand and cut the starting wages. And the real answer is most cops dont care, because they are already in. Its a very "look after number 1" type of culture. Also, most serving cops will have started on less than £19k.

The perks are the perks - but the pension is the real perk - not free coffee.

30 years and retire on a 20k+ a year pension.. thats why so many people apply. And thats just for a PC - look at an Inspectors pension.. you would have to be seriously wealthy to get that kind of return from a private pension.

So £19k, its not the end of the world. People will still join. I know there are a few serving officers on here - how many do they know who jacked the job in? I only know 1 - and the guy left to become a pilot. Its a good job, a hard job but most people dont join the cops on a whim - its something they really want to do.
The 30 year pension went out of the window in 2006 to be replaced by a 35 year one. People on the 30 one are now having their terms and conditions changed and will have to work longer for less.

Its not quite a simple as 30 years to 35 years. As you may or may not be aware.

Its a massive subject and I wont go into it in detail here because there is no point but any old pension schemes are still running and will start to pay out on the 30 year date. There are also protections in place for anyone with more than 10 years service.

In other words the new scheme is currently effecting a fairly small number and the new 2015 scheme will be the big change - but again there are protections in place for the old scheme - it will remain and will pay out after 30 years of service. You might not have paid in for 30 years, and you may have a second pension scheme which matures at a later date.

Again its complex but the bottom line is the govt wanted to put an age on the pension age and 55 is quite low so its 60. The old scheme was 25 years service at 55 or 30 years service at any age. Almost all cops went for the 30 years.

Thats for immediate pensions too, and thats not to say you can retire at an earlier age just you cant draw it till you are 60.

The people who move from military to police and move their pensions are a whole other conversation.

Its a good scheme, like I said. Very good.

There is very little recruitment as it is. I don’t think it really matters what the entry conditions are it will still be in demand.
Sorry to be a co*k and quote myself but I see Wiltshire posted an open application for 25 PC positions and had to shut it down within 3 hours after getting 100,000 requests for application forms..
