It may not be, however, on the very rare occasion we get snow people around me are too scared to clean the pavements due to the myth of others suing because of an accident they may 'cause' i.e. a patch that hasn't been cleared of ice properly. An excuse for laziness maybe?

Plus our budget for winter equipment is so small purely because its not a common occurrence, gritters are generally good enough (in the south anyway!). I say we implement Top Gears idea of converting Combine Harvesters

No it's not but for my line of work which involves travelling to 5 or 6 properties a day should I shovel every road I drive on?

I've been to Germany a few times in winter last visit was two years ago and their roads are maintained a lot more in the winter time than over here.

What happens when you live in a rural village like me? I don't see many people living on those quiet B roads I need to drive down to get to work, plus a lot of residents near me are elderly and struggle out of their houses on a good day, should I be asking them to help?.....hhhmmm....?!?!

The problem with sueing we have in the uk means nobody dares to clear there path/drive in fear of being liable if anybody slips over. as far as im aware if somebody slips on your path that HASNT been clear its an "act of god" (accident) if somebody slips on a path that YOU have touched (i.e salted/shovled) then YOU are liable

The whole suing issue is a myth! And this is exactly what I was saying earlier in the thread. Unless you clear a path and then wash it off with water in freezing conditions or place a minefield there, you will be fine!

A trusty old 'Sun' article haha. Personal injury lawyers are bound to say you might leave yourself liable, it's opening themselves up for business, even if its consultation fees.

The article does mention that its fine to clear the snow outside your property and says you're fine unless you making it more hazardous i.e like I said about washing the pavement with water. I think these issues are more aimed at businesses, but if they do nothing they are also leaving themselves open to health and safety issues.

The article also states at the bottom:

* We would like to make clear the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health did not issue a specific warning to homeowners and businesses not to clear snowy pavements as we reported in an earlier version of this story. In fact the IOSH was pointing out the risks under the current law of which they have no control. We are happy to make this clear.

edit: articles like this is what scare people into leaving it (even if they are missleading) and the problem is still the fear of being seued, even if its not entirely true

I'm with Wurzel here.

I live down the bottom of a slight hill, off a half a mile of private road that never sees a council gritter. Our Cul de sac has 16 houses all semis, every time there is significant snow we are all out clearing the drives, salting the road etc and doing the drives of our elderly neigbours too.

Problem arises when we turn out of our road onto the half mile private road, hardly anyone does anything apart from shashing up their Q7's and creating total gridlock

Was watching the news last night and by law here when it snows you have to clear a 1.69m path round your property line between 07:00 - 20:00 weekdays and 09:00 -20:00 weekends. Failure to do so could incure a fine of upto €5k. If anyone falls and injures themselve you can also be sued for their medical costs etc.

You need to arrange for someone to do it for you, same as when you go on holiday or are away from home. Not being there is no excuse for not clearing the snow.

My neighbour is in his 80s and he is out shoveling and sweeping his area.

I was woken up the other day by someone scraping the snow away outside with a wooden snow shovel at 06:25. Not a pleasant way to be woken up I can tell you.
