Good Point - I would say so, although heads still have to justify to ofsted inspections (confirmed by a current head teacher) why the school was shut.

Tbh i think Head Teachers are damned either way if they do shut they get a roasting about it, If they dont alot of parents moan that they should have been so its a catch 22.

Dont know how that one arose. But , i do know that all school closures arent taken lightly. For one thing, during OFSTED inspections , school closure due to inclement weather , is viewed very dimly m by the inspectors

I was a governor for six years, and things may have changed, but I don't recall the issue of closing a school due to bad weather was half as bad as having a high unauthorised absence rate.

In fact, going on all the endless policies and directives we used to receive from the LA, it wouldn't surprise me at all to find that schools were being put under pressure by the LA to close if they think they level of UA is going to be high. Let’s not forget the current fad for academies, and no LA wants to look bad to central government as it gives schools another reason to opt out.

I was reminded this morning that Teachers can be directed to attend their local school if they cannot get into their usual school ...... what a brilliant idea - let's roll it out Governors!!!

I didn't make it into work on Friday due to snow. Then again, neither did 95% of my students
What was nice, was that I got to try my Porsche in the snow whilst attempting to get to work.

What actually stopped me what the jack-knifed lorry in the road, and the 11cm of snow.
Poor show imho.

Anyhoo, I got home, poured myself a G & T, logged in remotely to the college, and got on with some work.
I even managed to email work to all of my students to carry on with - most handed it in between yesterday and today
The system WORKS.

The closure of the schools/educational establishments ISN'T in ANY way related to the "lowly" foot-soldier teaching staff.
The Governors and Head/Principal take this decision. NOBODY else.
To think otherwise, is ludicrous and demonstrates the actions of a troll (quelle surprise!)


Bring on tomorrow, as I fear more places will be shut in my area (one of the virtues of living in the countryside eh?).

Schools will probably shut, but contrary to the misconceptions and quite frankly, misplaced animosity, it will be for the right reasons.

FWIW, my sister is a Head of English. She has ALWAYS had the instruction that if she can't make it to her place of work (15 mile away), she's to report to our local school.
Like every teacher, as I'm led to believe. This isn't news. (or shouldn't be!)

FWIW, my 2 kids' schools are open, as is my college.

In deepest rural (snow-bound) Herefordshire.

The only caveat stated that travel should be undertaken as long as it is safe to do so.

Sounds pretty fair.

Don't know what all the fuss is about

All employees of LEA schools ,whether teachers ,support staff or TA , have always had it in their contracts that they(said employee) can be re- deployed in any of the Citys schools or, indeed, any establishment the employers see fit to re- direct employees

It's about time that they were actually made to attend their local school to help out - if they don't they lose a days pay!

Failing that - a FANTASTIC idea would be to add extra school days in the better weather ... instead of 7 weeks holiday in the summer, they get 6 weeks.

And don't get me onto Firemen with their claim that they are worth £35,000!!! This is a part time job (all firemen have 2 or 3 or 4 jobs to keep them busy) - it's an outrage!!

But Pete, it's not a case of "about time".... it's been written into Teacher contracts for YEARS.

And has never been an issue.

IMHO, this is one of the misconceptions about what teachers do: and as a result, a great many people jumping on a fictitious bandwagon about an issue that simply doesn't exist.

Not me though - when I can't make it in to work, I call/email them and let them know I'm working from home (G&T optional ).
But I do always email my superior a copy of the work I have done.

If the weather conditions are such that it is very difficult or even dangerous for parents to get their children to school, it seems sensible to close the school until conditions improve.

Bit of a waste of time to open the school for the few children who might just be able to make the journey.
