But to most casual armchair viewers it is.... it's the one where they all saw the original Imprezas winning leaping through the air driven by Mad McRae and they all decided they wanted one.
So the road car Impreza icon was born in the mid 90s, had its peak around 2000 and the dying legacy (no pun itended) lasted till the mid 2000s ... then the hatch killed it almost stone dead in the UK just about overnight!
I am glad I have owned one since 1996 (apart from a 3 month hiatus in 2008), but in many ways the king is dead!

To be fair the Impreza was dying as soon as the Hawkeye came out, a big Alfa lookalike that the main WRC drivers weren't keen on and then helped them develop the Hatch. I agree the Hatch did kill off the Impreza marque completley but I'd say that if the 2.5's weren't made of chocolate, there would of been a bit more demand for the Hatch and maybe not so much negativity about it. Sad state of affairs but every dog has its day and Subaru as a proper performance marque will end in the next few years in the UK, after Toyota reduce the price on the GT86 and the BRZ will probably increase and the demand for that will die right off.

I know they are doing well in the US and Aus, but the magic has gone for me. Glad I've still got my 'rusty old shed' as a reminder of the good times even if from time to time I think of selling it. Probably never will though!

It's sad, but it's the way of the world. I know people think I have a downer on the hatch for no good reason, but having owned these cars since 1996 and been through the whole cycle of Impreza desirability, reputation, even legend if you like I was pretty upset to see them misjudge the UK market so badly and with (IMO) such a poor effort.
