If i was south korea i wouldn't be too worried, NK missiles seem to struggle to hit anything they aim at and also the us has anti ballistic missiles defences keeping an eye on things. I dont think NK is stupid enough to believe they could actualy achieve anything with action, be a bit like a bug on a windscreen if they pick a fight. Its the threat that they percieve as important, so its just posturing.

Does NK have an air force to speak of?

Wouldn't surprise me if US went in with conventional weapons and bombed the s,hit out of NK's weapon's sites - I presume they know where they are.

NK leaders are all barking.

Apparently, Mr Kim went to school in Switzerland and was a reasonably normal 'yoof' there. I wonder what's happened to him since he got home?

Got it!

I've just read the following report:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-21974381

Mr Kim is learly p'd off because they've named one of their missiles in honour of him and his secret is finally out:

"Intelligence personnel are closely monitoring North Korea's readiness with its short, middle and long range missiles such as Scud missile, Nodong missile and Musudan missile," South Korean defence ministry official Kim Min-seok said.

Hasn't China pretty much washed its hands of NK? Its only ally in the world more or less. I can't see their first strike being a world killer but would make a mess. If it did then the whole world will retaliate. Probably conventionally as most NK inhabitants live in constant fear. Least it's what I would do.

I always find it amusing how lunatic dictators who hate the West send their children to Western countries to get an education. On the flip side these Western countries have no morals and don't care who they let in including the UK.

Someone should buy him an Xbox 360 mega pack that comes with modern warfare, that should keep him occupied for a bit.

He looks like the fat rich kid at school that had no chance of pulling a bird but he had all the latest gadgets.

Apparently all this posturing is to get the US to the negotiating table, seem bit extreme to threaten Nuclear attacks, perhaps a nice, polite letter to Mr Obama might be more productive.

This is like Chihuahua barking its head off at a pack of Rottweilers, I suspect the US will just listen and perhaps do some further shows of strength, I reckon the US generals are laughing at NK and they are humouring them, they will put up with a lot of crap as it isnt in their interest to react, may as well play the long suffering pacifist but the minute any credible action with the remotest possible chance of harming a US citizen then things could get pretty toasty, pretty quick in NK, I would hope that no nukes are used as no point killing and inuring possibly thousands of people because the leader is a dick, I reckon it would be surgical air strikes to Kim Jongs gaff.

Does NK have an air force to speak of????? Are you for real?

The North Koreans were the first to fly the Russian MIG15 in combat against the Americans in 1950 and had many successes.

Mind you the MIGS were probably flown by experienced Soviets and Chinese pilots.

Wasn't until the Yanks virtually copied the MIG design and brought in the F86 Sabre and started to get the upper hand.

This really is getting out of hand now.
Do we wait until they bomb something? We know they can't seem to hit anything with any accuracy but that's the worrying thing. They may aim for a military installation and end up destoying a small villiage.

I know a lot of you joke on here about them not really being a threat, but come on. Threatening nuclear war is a very dangerous move. I see a 'cold war 2' on the horizon.

The UN may as well retire. They do absolutely nothing worth while. All you hear is, 'The UN chief says that he will impose more sanctions...blah blah blah'. Do you really think they care??

Am I reading too much into the all their rhetoric? Or is there something very bad around the corner?

My point being to ask if NK Air Force was a match for latest US fighter power if it got serious as I am not an expert in these things.

This seems to give an idea and it seems they make up for any technical shortfall by sheer number of aircraft if statistics are correct. Could these bring down stealth bombers?

numbers arnt that far apart though,

500 fighters 200 strike nk

400 fighters fighter/bombers sk

most NK planes are pretty outdated now and would suffer heavy casualty ratio's vs sk, also doesnt take into accoutn american forces in sk. US has deployed pretty much all the plane types availale to them, as well as f-22's apparently.

the numbers also assuem there all airworth, which wont be the case

al-Assad was a reformist to begin with, but he realised that that wouldnt work.

I suspect that NK started out looking for help but its sabre rattling and poor leadership/judgement has ended up alienating all sides.

Cool

I don't think you will see CHina jump to their aid like they did in the 50s. China ceased being a communist state a long time ago. They are the largest economy in the world, they don't want to get dragged in to anything that will change that position.

If NK nuked anyone pre-emptively, I can't see China defending that. They could crush NK financially in the blink of an eye, no one else trades with them!

I think if the guy carries on as he has been hes going to get himself killed, essentially hes saying hes got all these missiles and hes goign to fire then at the USA and SK, surley there both keeping a sharp eye on him , so if anythign is fired, it will be shot down long before it hits his target and they will be in there like a shot and kill him "to stop him doing it again"

i dont think anythign will come of it tbh so im not worried...

In my view this is just a way for NK to get some attention to lift sanctions (EG, we will agree to not start the nuclear reactors and stand down our troops if you agree to provide more aid/lift sanctions). I really doubt the NK leadership is under any other impression than they will get soundly pummeled should they actually start shooting.

It makes pretty poor reading, only Mig 29's that would bother US aircraft of which they only have 35 of the rest are 1950's 60' and 70's aircraft that wouldn't stand a chance against modern aircraft or defence systems.

Mig 21s 23s SU25s and a load of Chinese tat make up the bulk of their airforce which may well have been impressive 40+ years ago but would anyone want to go up against an F22 in any of those?

I don't think anyone will find out anyway as it's all idle threats by NK.

some f22's/f18's/f15's would go down, even at 20-1 or 50-1 NK would loose the fight very quickly. US can surge aircraft from carriers within days of an escilation, not even to metnion what they have there already inplace. NK airfields would get peppered by stealth and high speed runs by b1's early doors leaving NK with rough field aircraft only. Not sure how effective b52's would be other than stand of role though, anti air defences are pretty numerous and the b52 isnt fast or stealthy.

thats best case for NK, worst case no US casualties, although dont think that would happen.

Also problem NK has its a small country (half the size of the UK), also its not like afganistan where the fighters are hidden amongst the population and use gurilla tactics. There in plain sight and intel on assets and such will be very good and up to date. comand and control plus long range missiles will get hit first. And thats all the teeth NK have pulled.

B52 are out of the question, easy targets for NK or any defence today, they lost quite a few in Vietnam and things have moved on since even for NK.

I'll bet if it kicks off China will be in there backing up NK, just like they did in 1950.
