Hmm, looking at the 2010 official EU stats (latest I could find) http://epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu/sta...20130204085131)
The UK has the highest amount of legal immigration in the EU.

am thinking of putting a advert in national press,
wanted person from eu to take over my job, must be prepared to work for £6.70 per hour and pay my redundancy off then sit back and enjoy the ride,
would only be £72.00 a month worse off, ime sure we can make a few cut backs somewhere

and here it shows Germany with highest then ,Spain 2nd, Italy 3rd and UK 4th population of total immigrants. Restricting this to only EU immigrants it goes Germany 1st, Spain 2nd then UK in 3rd
Of interest is that it says as of 2011 there were only 2,061,000 EU immigrants in the UK. That's sounds lower than other figures that have been kicking around and personally I think they are lower than the true figures.

Genuine question, but do other EU countries offer handouts like we do?
I see both sides of the argument here; there are positives and negatives to migration, but it does frustrate me that they come here and seemingly dont have to do anything to get handouts.
Do some of you PC brigade genuinely think they deserve these benefits?

Something odd about those two sets of immigration figures.
For a start they are presented in entirely different ways, for a second thing, the UK figure has dropped by nearly 25% while the German figure has RISEN by 75% in ONE YEAR???
I rather think we'd have heard something about our fall, let alone their rise, if those figures were right.

No of course not-it was a figure of speech which is used widely. I could not believe that you genuinely misunderstood that. I got the impression instead that you were scratching for some sort of a reply!
Mind you-what do you suggest if the estimated 4 million actually appear, how do you suggest that this country copes with that?

4 million!! That would be about 20% of the combined population of Romania and Bulgaria. Who's 'estimate' is that?
Last one I saw from Immigration Watch (hardly a left-wing thinktank) was for 50k. I noticed you chose to to quote that one!
btw - when you state that 'all' you either mean all or you mean something else, much easier to actually describe the 'something else'. The only reason you said 'all' was to sensationalise AGAIN

Are you being a bit obtuse there, Martin? Surely Les was meaning 'why do all of the immigrants coming across here want to be here?' rather than 'why do all of the population of Bulgaria/Romania want to come here' - not that hard to understand really!
I'm not a big fan of influx of people who will send the money they earn home and rinse the NHS but if they pay tax and do jobs that the lazy Brits wont then fair play. God knows what the truth of the matter is as all the stats bandied about appear to be skewed for an ulterior motive every time they are published, negatively or positively.

I have no problem with immigration as a concept, the issue is who we allow in, there should be strict criteria and a need, there are a lot of hard luck cases in the world and we need to avoid becoming one.
If I wanted to settle in another country I would have to meet criteria, to be a certain age, have money or skills, why do we end up with unskilled non English speaking people turning up along with the hard working, every hotel desk is now staffed by girls called Magda and fair play, come over and work but there seems to be an awful lot of people that have nothing to offer, we have a duty to take a certain number of Asylum Seekers but the term has been turned into a pejorative one and it just means now someone trying it on to get a free ride.
I dont want to pay tax so people can come over and get free medical care, I pay it along with the rest of the workforce to cover people who live here, dont give my money away to someone who has just arrived and has a littany of medical problems, it dilutes what this country has built and turns it into an international drop in centre.
So, shut the door, count who is here, look after them and only let new ones in on merit, EU notwithstanding....

I know what you're saying but Les' question was why would all the Bulgarians that are (allegedly) coming/going to come here, wanting to come here? (in fact that probably doesn't make sense either!!)

Ironically I don't have time to go right into it as I'm trying to work but I would suggest that there must be problems with the current system if there is a so called influx of unskilled non English speaking immigrants coming in and about to come in. I'll let those who are more familiar with the current system pick holes in it or support it
