exactly what benefits does smoking bring? its already been proved that it cost more to the health service than tax revenues. It has no good side, people dont even think it makes you look cool any more. So other than the 'i want to smoke to cos its my right' theres no possible argument to keep it.

This is one of those things that makes my blood boil when I see it. Even worse when the smoker has their window fully closed.
I like the odd ciggy but I always go outside to have one. I then wash my hands and face before I go anywhere near my son.
My stupid niece smoked all the way through her pregnancy and guess what - her son has severe asthma and he has to use a pump every day. The saddest part is that she still hasn't worked out that she is to blame for it.
I still find it hard to believe that you can't smoke in a pub but you can smoke in a fully sealed car with a 1 day old baby.
The laws in this country regarding smoking are a complete joke. A bit like the scary pictures/slogans that they now have on *** packets.
The government make more money in taxes from smokers than what they cost us on the NHS, but yet they continue to allow them to be sold and we are all told that we are stupid people if we smoke.

You can be fined for not being completely in control of the vehicle. Police have actually given out fines to people biting an apple at traffic lights...and she fought it, but lost It was then £60 and 3 points....
Imagine what mags would do if you were caught at 70mph on a motorway eating, or drinking?

Personally I would say such a law is pointless and that it would be better to educate people not too smoke when there are children around indoors etc.
I guess I just don't like being told what to do (a lot).
ps I don't smoke - but you never know, I might like to take it up one day.

You dont get "caught" for eating and drinking. Drive like a **** whilst eating drinking...yes indeed. But then as you say, its because you aren't in control.
Eating, drinking, smoking etc. are not illegal in anyway, so if the copper deems you to be in control, its no problem. I'd like the country to stay like that... rely on the coppers discretion. Not whats written on paper.

Yes you could certainly say that, and look at what alcohol can do to you as well if you get hooked. Trouble is, in so many cases it does not encourage sensible usage, some are more easily caught under its spell than others.
I think it is totally unfair to smoke in a car thus forcing children in the car to breathe the unhealthy fumes. In the first place it is very unpleasant, is bad for them, and could possibly encourage a child to take it up too. If you must smoke at least you should be responsible about the way you do it.

I would not say ban smoking if there are no kids present, that is a little strong, then again, there is the whole thing about not eating / drinking while operating a motor vehicle, so it could be seen as a similar thing.
I disagree that it's only "morons" or a minority that will spark up when kids are around (be it in a car or elsewhere), I think that to most smokers it's a reactive thing to just spark up, second nature as it were.

To me, most of the talk of legislation being bandied about nowadays seems to be a repost to bad parenting or the resistance to accept personal responsibility.
Stop thickos breeding and most of this wouldn't be an issue anymore.
Why worry about it? I don't smoke and never have, but would value the freedoms of responsible smokers over the negative impact of smoking on thickos and their offspring. If they don't damage their kids with *** smoke they'll probably find another way to do it anyway. Deal with them directly if needs be rather than punishing everybody.

Even an anti-smoking website couldn't make that claim as an absolute, despite trying their very best. The only figures that seemed to be definite were:
Cost to the NHS was £2.7 billion (although another study estimates it could be as high as £5.5b)
Tax raised was £12.1 billion including VAT.
That is a lot of money to find from elsewhere if everyone stopped smoking, not to mention, if we all believe smoking kills, the cost in the long run of all these evil smokers living longer (pensions, general healthcare in later life etc)
Any other figures seem to be guess work, and no doubt a 'bad' guess in an attempt to support their view point.
For all I am a smoker, I would actively encourage people not to start. It's not a good habit, and it is costly, but I get fed up with smokers being demonised so much.
FWIW, I don't think people should smoke in the car around kids as it is a very confined space.

When I was a field manager I could put on a tie, do up my shoe laces, peel and eat a banana, undo 20 Marlboro Lights, pull one out with my teeth, spark it up and put my cd of the moment on all before I hit (not literally) the M4. That's when I'd arrange my conference calls until I arrived at my first store for 08:30 (the managers got to their stores at 8:40 - I had to be there first - it put me in control). It was never worth the three figure salary, but I'm glad I saved nearly all I earned. It really is quite incredible what risks we'll take with our lives; even more amazing what risks we'll take with the lives of others and our loved ones for the filthy lucre and our addictions. I just wish I could go back and speak to some of the people I rushed or brushed past along the way; just to chat a while. As William. H. Davies put it:
What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare...
We have no time to stand and stare...

Ban smoking in cars when they carry kids I'm 100% behind it, A total ban on smoking in cars and the cases of road rage would go through the roof, I know this because I'm currently stopping right now and have come close a few times to jumping out of the car and smacking some ****, I'm normally easy going as well unless I'm pushed.
As for not being in control whats the difference between changing a CD, Radio Station, changing gear even as you don't have both hands on the wheel to eating an apple?

Surely you realise the difference with dropping a cd on your lap and dropping a lit ciggy?
Which one is going to make you panic more?
