It's the reason why so many performance cars now use controllable flaps in the system. Aston Martins and the like would be very noisy at the sort of flow levels required, so they have valves in the tail to shut them up at low speeds.
I dare say Scoobies will have them as well when somebody figures it out!

That Suffolk Police thing is barking. They are only getting away with it as they know nobody from a cruising group, and that's their target, is going to take them on in court. They just dish out a £30 fixed penalty, and hope it goes away.
My Lambretta is over 100 db, and they can't do a damn thing about it..

P.S. I agree that this is getting silly, anyone with a brain takes care of where they use all that expensive V Power ?

Big bore and sports exhaust systems are usually fitted to increase the sound emitted and this contravenes the Type Approval of the vehicle, which is an offence. There is no requirement for police to measure the sound level from the exhaust system, it only requires an opinion that the system is not standard and that it is noisier than a normal vehicle of the same specification.

After reading this, if im fitting mine to increase power and not just noise, does that make it legal lol

After a quick google there is a massive rant on a harley owners site aswell. Just out of interest how loud is a scooby with a prodrive exhuast ? If mine is the same does that make it legal ?

But a "normal" vehicle of the same spec. will have a big bore exhaust too !

LOL

dunx

P.S. Didn't the P1 get an extra dB due to being classed as a "supercar" due to it's performance ?

A possible solution for those with switchable mapping?
Pop it on to a map with a 2400 rpm soft rev limit.
"Sorry officer, it won't rev any more than that, here, you try it"

No, it's deliberately sold by dealers after the sale of the car, as is the ecu. To avoid liability for such a case.

I think you right it's bully boy tactics scare people with court or pay the money, I honestly thing in court it wouldn't stick,

I can understand certain cars such as corsa's, Saxos etc etc as the noise is awful but a lot of scoobies add an exhaust system more for performance

How about litchfields/sva for example with the Miltek?

Is this legal considering they imported new cars and offered a warranty service?

I know mine is quiet when it needs to be but 86db??

your right about the bully boy tactics but im betting if it went to court you would lose on the grounds of noise nuisance/asbo

the problem is people say ill go court etc, but they never do as people that have done it will tell you 99% of the time they side with the police and when you lose you get stuck with court costs too.

Very true Tommy, which is the point I was trying to make earlier! People on here say 'oh that will get laughed out of court' when they have probably never been or have no idea what goes on in a law court!!

I like their understanding of why big-bore xhausts are fitted: to increase the sound. Nowt to do with the power, then?

the police know this also and when faced with a £30 fine or going to court to argue something that you probably wont win and then being saddled with costs on top of the fine. 99% of people wont bother and will cough up the £30.

tbh though i kind of agree with the fine if its used against the idiots that drive around housing estates annoying the residents.

you have to see it from both sides, if you complained to the police about a kid with a noisy exhaust drivng past your house every 2 mins and they did nothing, you would get the usual "why dont you catch criminals instead of speeders ..........etc)

and i have zero respect for the police in terms of car related issues and i have a full 3 inch decat cobra on my car.

VOSA were all over my Scoob about 1 months back, roadside check.
Picked up an engine/gearbox change, not recorded at DVLC, but were more interested in lights: tinted indicators were slagged off.

They didn't give a stuff about the exhaust.

But yes, if you've never been to court, you have NO IDEA............

Your mate should just buy one of those electronic exhaust valve flap things
At the flick of a switch you have a quieter exhaust lol

Worth a try surely

Firing the Cosworth up sometimes wakes my neighbours. Unless your exhaust is particularly antisocial I doubt it would be much louder than mine.

The police really should think of something better to do! Why not try and find some car thieves or uninsured drivers rather than picking on us lot?

as i said earlier, i have no time for the police on trivial motoring offences but they may be acting on complaints.

imagine if you were the complainee, what would you expect them to do??

I'd expect them to pick on particularly antisocial cars - maybe the OP's car is one of them, maybe not - and perhaps park up in some residential areas and give a few saxo and fiesta drivers a hot ear.

I used to hear some particularly idiotic ones driving down for their meets in Chorley when I worked at the hospital and could hear their farty but extremely loud cars a mile off over the sound of my own Prodrived car at the time.

Took a Gallardo out before Christmas and it was so bloody loud I thought there was something wrong with it. Was totally standard and far louder than any Impreza I've ever heard. Regardless of complaints you can't have rules for some and not for others. Are the police going to pull the driver of one of them over and fine them?

Just looked this bit up.

It would appear that all STis with the PPP kit were classed as such

http://www.acboom.cz/subaru/dalsi/pdf/MY_STi_PPP.pdf

The car obviously fit into the noise and emissions category but of course needs suitable performance. I guess cracking 62mph in less than five seconds or so gains you entry.

I suspect this could be used as an argument by anyone whose car was originally fitted with a PPP, the car is already classed as being very loud and surely needs to be within the range limit e.g. 101db? Supercars are very loud things!

I suspect any recent Impreza STi 330s / 340r / CS400 would fit into the same category.

I think it's great how some people think that there is Justice for the common man in a court room.

As the great Richard Pryor said " I went to court looking for Justice and the judge said aint no justice here boy, Just us "

kangaroo court and railroad is more like it, the Whole system is basically set up to milk the tax paying law abiding citizens, whilst giving the appearance of truth and justice, corruption at it's finest.

So as it seems the plods are cracking down on peeps with big exhausts for performance rather than sound lol what would be the best option to reduce sound for peeps with full stainless no cats systems ?

i can see why they would clamp down as you do get the odd idiot that likes to boot it everywhere including residential areas which in all honestly is a lil annoying haha
