Had a chainsaw kick back at me when it chewed on some fencing wire....luckily it took a chunk out of my helmet/guard, not me.

A chap at work has just come out of hospital after a nasty chainsaw accident. He was cutting logs at a mates house when he stumbled back and brought the running saw against his face- went straight through his cheek and just missed by a hairs width, his artery in his neck!!

His mate had to shove a work glove in the gap in his face to try and plug it till the ambulance arrived!

Tools like chain saw, circular saw, jig saw and band saw etc. are lethal! Mind you, simple cutlery has proven to be lethal. There was someone we knew who stood on a fork (the one we eat food with) by accident, and had to have an operation to get it out. It went right through. Ouch!

Well, nothing exciting I'm afraid.

I was cleaning the toilet floor. I was kneeling down and my leg sort of slipped away from me and my toenail got caught on the carpet strip thingy and ripped the nail right off.

Seems I've been rather fortunate with the circular saw: I did cut up a tree that blew over in a storm with a hand held circular saw once. I was drunk and ran out of 2 stroke oil for the chain saw. It snagged a few times, but nothing happened.

Doing stuff whilst drunk isn't really advised....for example I did have a bench grinder eject a piece of metal at my forehead, undeterred I carried on and did it again. Left some rather strange indentation marks/bruises on my head for a week.

Now removing the tar from the sill of my car whilst it was on a 4 post ramp resulted in a 3" gash in my head. Stupid amounts of blood, all my hair was red with it and running down my face. Hands covered in it too. Still have the scar.

Oh and I slipped and dropped a running angle grinder on my finger. Just a flesh wound as some may say....fingernails took the burnt of it

However by far the worst though was getting gassed by chlorine tablets (Trichloro-isocyanuric acid to be precise). Normally perfectly fine to handle by hand when dry, but some idiot had put wet tablets into a sealed container (not me), so when I opened the tub I got a full face of chlorine gas...I didn't really inhale it, but even so all I managed was two paces away from the tub before collapsing to the ground in a coughing heap...I couldn't breath, I couldn't see, my face felt like it was burning.

Ive almost cut through nerve/vein in my forearm, that wasnt pretty. Took a few years for the skin to get sensation back too.

yep,i have the same injury,about 6 years ago i was carrying a sheet of glass which broke and my wrist slipped down the edge,cut the tendons to all 4 fingers and cut the artery,boy do they bleed,,now have limited movement in my fingers,then about six months ago shoved my thumb through the dimension saw at work and took the top of it,but they say youre not a proper joiner if youve got all youre fingers

Anyone ever welded something (in this case a homemade M8 tap to a 1/4 extension socket), and then blatantly picked it up within maybe 30 seconds - without gloves.

Christ it burnt for about 3 hours before subsiding and totally killed my finger prints (thumb/index) for about 2-3 weeks.

Admittedly this was at work but doing a little DIY job to make my task at work easier.

Punched myself in the mouth with a 22mm spanner that slipped of an 02 sensor, split gum and lip, loose tooth & mouth full of blood. Threw the spanner over next door's garden, haven't got round to asking for it back yet.

Did this years ago when a car changed lanes and pushed me and my motorbike into a wall separating carriageways. My arm was pushed against the top edge of the wall and I was dragged along it while the wall sawed through my arm leaving part of my bicep spread along it. The scar goes almost all the was around my arm. It took a couple of years before I was fully able to use it.

Its just a scratch some gaffa tape would of fixed that looks like someone has been holding something with his left hand while using the circullar saw to cut thru and as you have drastically found out its not a good idea.

My mate nearly lost his arm when it got dragged into a band saw. Took a few years and a few skni grafts and he has full use of his arm and hand bar some scarring. So chin up as in time you will look back and laugh at this

I also got a spelk in my hand while cleaning down a door frame, it was huge and quite painfull.

One DIY and one not.....and both true

DIY: Was going to town on myself and happened to tear the old banjo string (if you know what I mean).....quite painful

Non-DIY: Was running down the stairs at home (which are carpetted). I had no socks on fell half way down.....on getting to the bottom by left little toe and the one next to it were killing me so had a look.....turns out they scrapped down the stairs and friction caused the skin to kind of melt and join together so that the top of my two toes were now one......after much swearing by me the misses got the surgical scissors and cut them apart again.....

Don't wear a fleece when welding above your head; polyester is rather flammable.
