From my own experience I can tell you that a classic at circa 420hp is no more fun than one at 320. The amount of money it costs to gain that 100hp is ridiculous.

But, I will be purchasing another classic impreza shortly. Will I get silly and push for more power than the last one knowing what I know now.

Ofcourse I bloody will !!!!!!!
im betting its in your garage by the time i drop those wheels off

Fuel Pump - £150 - more like 75 for a genuine walbro
Exhaust - £400 - £800 (dependends how far you go) - err..??? for 350hp he will be fine with even a PPP exhaust, and I bet he can get all the parts for 250 with spare change. No need to change the centre section either.
Engine Map - £300 - £700 (£2000 plus if you go for a simtek ecu) - why would he go for a simtek on a 350hp new age FGS? Even an unlicensed ecutek map is only 550, and the new age ECU is perfectly capable at this level.
Roger Clark Oil Pump - £150 - again, why? The standard one is perfectly fine.

To add to the above, I would budget for :
A new clutch and flywheel - £600. The standard clutch is fine at this level. Even so, if you're looking at getting a fresh clutch for a leggy engine, you'll need to do the same for an STI.

As for the rest, you'd need to change these on an STI as well.
New suspension - £400 - £1000.
New bushes - ???
Anti lift Kit and fatter anti roll bars - £300+

So, I make that around 1500 for an OS remap, or 1800 for an ecutek.
Ok, so I over-estimated a little. Please tell me where you can get sti pink injectors for £100. Not second hand, new.

The standard oil pump, especially on older imprezas, has a common issue with the relief valve. I would at least fit a new standard one, especially if the engine had gone and bits of the big end bearings had been floating through the oil ways!

The clutch may well be fine, but lets be honest, the guy isn't interested in going slowly is he? Plus it depends entirely on how much life the original clutch has left. So, yes, he may not need one. But if he does and he hasn't budgeted for it, that it going to hurt!

My guide was to show the guy how much things can cost. If he doesn't want/need all the of the mentioned parts, fine. But I didn't want him to go into it blind. Plus he also said he like sthe 'engineering' side and watching the build take shape. So, by that reasoning, he will probably want the best of the best, which isn't cheap.

So bringing this one back to life and looking at all my options I think my plan now is to forget the horsepower increase and save that for a near future project.

I still owe a couple of years finance on my Focus which is my daily drive ( impreza wouldnt be ) so il look at maybe getting a cheap WRX bugeye.

As this will be my first impreza it will give me a better understanding of the car and to get active with the owner clubs and see first hand what i aspire to own in the future.
Il probably do some very minor mods to styling, engine and ICE.

So would I get a sensible WRX bug for the £2000 mark or is that way off.

This way I can get the Impreza towards the end of the year and not have made any major jump with finances which still should leave me free to make some mods like i suggested.

You could buy my bug eye wagon, but i'd be looking at around 2800 for it.

318.2 hp (on the 13th of this month at surrey rolling road), suspension mods done, slightly uprated brakes. Let me know if you want the full spec and I'll send it across
