Holset Turbos, Anyone Using One?
#62
Didn't "give up" I am not a defeatist. Engineering project complete, worked well.
Turbo was sold for it's going rate, £225 for a 450+hp turbo is where it's at with a holset. The whole conversion cost less than £400. Including oil pipes, silicon, up pipe down pipe, heat wrap- the lot.
Going back to my 16g-top mount-std air box, by far the best combo for the daily commute on a std wrx engine and box.
The up-pipe adaptor and down pipe is for sale too, suit any T3 turbo and keep your excistkng uppipe and support bracket.
Still the first person to run a holset on a scoob in the uk, that was the point of my project to prove it can be done and it works. Turbo is still on the car just now and I am using it daily for work and picking up my daughter.

All HX35 turbos use T3 flanges, however you will not get one with a housing smaller than 12cm, useless for an impreza. I CNC machined garrett housing to fit mine.

Well done for trying it!
Looking at the installation and the t3 adapter; did it prove possible to keep the rotor centerline +/- 5 degrees off horizontal? And the oil feed +/- 10 degrees off vertical?

The rotated kit is for sale on eBay. Oil return and oil feed are in the same plane? But was pretty near to vertical, not that it matters, my mates running a turbo at near 45 degrees no probs, the Saab 900's used to have some angle on the turbo too

Did you consider using an oil feed restrictor? To keep max pressures under 88psi cold and 72psi warm? Did you use a min 14mm dia drain, as per the smaller holsets, or min 19mm dia drain to sump?
Did you drain into the sump above or below the oil level?

Matters.
And I think you will find as with any big turbo a restrictor is required to stop it bypassing oil.
