newbie having midlife crisis

as said above, i had an rx8 before the scooby, it didnt use that much oil, about half a pint every 1000 miles (i checked it weekly) but then others seem to use more oil than petrol, i dont know why. the good points of them are the handling, their like a bigger mx5. even in standard form, with good tyres the handling was superb but they are underpowered. the bad point was the fuel consumption. not that it bothered me that much but it never went above 14mpg, no matter how you drove it. apparently mazda overestimated the power output. i heard from a reputable tuner that even the so called 231ps models were only pushing out around 210. cracking car to drive but the engine will need a rebuild at some point due to its design. got the scoob now and would never look back!

Hi Dave T.
I'm just about to get my 3rd Subaru. I've had a Catalunya and a 95 JDM import. Once you drive one in my experience you won't want anything else.
My biggest impression about them - SAFETY.
I've had 3 potentially nasty experiences (none my fault) and as a passenger said after one of them, "someone could have been killed, thank God we were in a car like this".
Some clown tried to turn right off a roundabout on a dual carriageway - having entered it in the left-hand lane with no indication. I was going straight on, starting to accelerate out of it and he blocked me off. My only option was to send the car almost all the way around the roundabout. No sideways movement at all, in full control.
I had a beach buggy when I was younger, and I never thought a car would match it for acceleration and manoeuverability. (Mind you that was in the 70's).
I also think that Dave Y has given good advice, hinting at 'moddingmania'.
There's an awful lot you can do to a basic one, slowly and surely.
My final comments - caveat emptor.
I bought my second one from a private seller on E-bay and had good value. He said the car was modded and "running 291bhp" and it certainly performed like that.
About 6 months later, at MoT time I found out why.
He'd literally cut the Cat out and did a reasonable welding job on the repair.
He was one of those youngsters who had heard that 'removing the cat adds 35bhp', and since the car's notional bhp was 256 he used his maths !
Another quick example - there's a clown on E-bay selling a classic with a 2.1 stroker engine. He's put a clip on Youtube - of him using an urban dual carriageway as a drag strip in the dead of night. I commented and he said "it's a 2.1 stroker, so it's no problem".
Clearly doesn't realise that cars have clutches, tyres and a whole host of other things that have to be able to take the engine's full power.
btw that pic you put up from the car sales in Newport - IMHO the car looks like a complete dog.
Finally finally I bought my Subaru as a result of looking at many of the posts on this forum. I learned a mass of things about scoobies. Genuine enthusiasts, in all senses of the word.
I hope you get a good one.

Still hunting!!!!
A bit frustrated with 'mint' descriptions that are far from it, but thats life i guess. Its hard to see 'mint' as 'cracked headlight/holes in the seats/flat tyre & a wicked score line down the side...... just a waste of everyones time.....
Anyone who knows or sees a nice car please give me a nudge chaps/chapetts.
Dont have a specific car/spec in mind (bug/blue/remap/mint/low miles/blonde milf owner would be nice lol).
Have the funds........
Cheers Wales!

That is a nice looking one.
If the insides have been as well looked after you've definitely got a good 'un.
A nice few extras as well, those digital guages and the yaw sensor attached to the rear view mirror.
Enjoy !

sounds like you made your mind up on the rx8, just a note, i had one a while back and they are beautiful things to drive BUT i used to get 18mpg with the wife and kids in it on a gentle trundle on dual carriageways! dont even ask about cuffing it.
also while it is a really nice space to be in ( bose stereo etc) my old sit whupped it on performance and grin factor and mpg.
no contest, i'm about to buy another myself after a few years in the wilderness
good luck with the search

Well pleased with the decision NOT to buy an RX8 mate!
Managed 31mpg on a run over weekend (and not exactly driving like Miss Daisy).

cheers, welshboyo & she's in good hands.
Looking forward to oil/gearbox fluids this weekend.
Toyed with the idea of decats/uppipes, but just going to stick with a decent remap. So Andrew Carr, Duncan (Dynamix) or Bob Rawle - decisions hey
Answers on a postcard please!

He's regarded as top tier and he's mobile, virtually just 1/2 the M4 away from you (well apart from a stretch of the M25).
Bob - another regarded as top notch - is in Swindon, a stone's throw.
