My dad was similar. He was made redundant from his steel works and still thinks she was right to do what she did. Just goes to show that some people affected can see reason when it's staring them in the face. Others just get bitter about anyone who affects their lifestyle, regardless of the factors behind it.

Cool

Thatcher just presided over the inevtiable. Manufacturing had already started to shift, certain coal mines were becooming uneconomical.

Scargill killed the miners, not Thatcher. If they had agreedto close the eneconomic mines originally, I doubt the whole industry would have been dismantled (then anyway, they only have a certain shelf life!)

Scargill had been defeated in two prior ballots for a strike, so called one without a ballot, so he didn't have popular support. And, the idiot called it in the spring. You'd think he would have the sense to do it the autumn!

His stubborness did as much damage as Thatcher's.

And, us northerners do like to complain

The loans that we took out from the USA during WW11 were paid off while she was in power.

I was one of those people, worked in utilities since the early 80's and remember at the interview the engineer said after confirming I had got the job, "listen lad, forget about working anywhere else, unless you do something stupid, you have a job here for life, 27 days paid holiday, superannuation scheme, opportunities to progress etc., etc."

Within 15 years, after privatisation I was out of a job and after looking at the positives, chose a slightly different career path and life went on.

Voted for Maggie in 79 and continued to vote Conservative right up to the last election.

All I'd say to those sad folk celebrating her death is; she won the argument, she won 3 elections, she was right and no one has undone what she did....get over it.

I also think you should read up/look at the stats. There was no remorseless 'self is good state is bad'.... Government spending broadly rose under Thatcher. All she did was shift the balance n the right direction.

I'm all for expression and freedom of speech but some people really abuse that privilege.

Freedom of speech is fine.

So long as every person exercising it knows the full ramifications of what they are doing....Like that Copper who had to resign, and that teenage crime 'Zsar'.

As I said earlier if I ever saw a child of mine doing what I've seen some kids doing...their belongings would be in bin liners on the doorstep. Yes, they can say what they like...but not whilst living under my roof!

I'm sure, given time, she could find a tenuous link to blame Thatcher for the current situation in the Korean peninsula.

In light of the pathtetic politicians we have to endure nowadays on any party, her death saddens me, as there is no one who even remotely has any form of leadership quality.

Hers was the one voice which stood up against the Eu, all the others are frightened to say anything in support of their own countries. No one dared to go against the word "No" when she said it. Oh how we need such a leader now!

Ali B is so right when he says that she was the greatest leader we have had since Winston Churchill. He was another one who would do anything to support our country. Will we ever see another leader up to their standards?

We suffered a great loss when she left power and also now that she has died. I am very glad that she will have a state funeral which is befitting for someone who did so much for this country.

Well said les.

Was only young when maggie were in power and the Falklands etc was happening, but over the years have read quite a few things on maggie, good and bad.
You can't deny the woman was a real leader and didn't take any crap.
Huge respect for someone like her,who will stick their head above the parapet. Our modern day politicians are just a bunch of sissy boys with no ***** or guts.

The footage on the news of strikes and riots etc was a good reminder of how the police also used to be able to deal with troublemakers charging in with batons and giving them a good whack. Perhaps if they could do that today the scum that go out protesting to cause trouble would think twice about doing it. Now if the police hit anyone participating in a riot they get sacked and possibly sued by the person they hit which shows what an effing joke this country has become since Thatcher left power.

Run a small PR company. Possibly about to buy a hotel. Flexible, pays bills, live by the sea so surf a lot. Two nice kids (plus a nice wife!). Yourself?
