How many of the Thatcher sycophants on this thread are 50 or over?
If you are not then you cannot comment about the state of the nation pre-79 as you were all kids at best. You crticise those students for protesting against her for being too young yet were too young yourselves to remember what the country was really like before her preferirng instead to trot out the same old mantra about how the unions ran the place and everything was terrible like it was the Dark Ages.
The economy may have been bad, but there were also a lot of good things about this country and its society in the 70s...... Thatcher killed a lot of that along the way not that I expect any of you to get that as you are all way too far up yourselves to cosnider you may not be right about something.
I am glad she has gone and I wish people could forget about her... sadly her legacy of a selfish and crooked society won't allow that and we are living in the sh1tpit she created and her fan Blair perpetuated. A visionary she may have been, it's a pity her visison was such a p1ss poor one!

I'm 45 have very clear memories of the pre Thatcher Britain thank you very much. Oh and sycophant??? really wtf are you on?
Whatever way you look at it, this country was made more prosperious by Thatcher, and ultimately she comprehensively won the argument against people who hold views like yours.
Also I think you need to help me understand how you can draw a straight line between Thatcherism and somebody nicking copper wire. You seem to be suggesting that there was no free will pre Thatcher?

I think in general society was no better or worse pre-Thatcher than it is today, just different. My father in-law was a policeman from the 60's through to the 90's in the metropolitan area and what people did was no less heinous that it is today. There were still gun crime, bank robberies, muggings, stabbings, murders and more hate crimes. Gang crime was prevalent back then as it is now, I remember seeing masses of youths, mods, rockers, punks and skinheads going around beat the crap out of each other with sticks, bats and knives. The media today also plays a huge part with the reporting of crimes are and more so than they were of yesteryear. You have, for example paedos and men of the cloth that are only now coming to light for what they done all those many years ago.
For me society in the 70's was a terrible time and I remember it vividly even to this day. The prejudice that me, my siblings and parents and other family members experienced back then would not be allowed to go unchecked today. My parents ran a takeaway and as a kid I helped out at the back of the shop, I remember the frequent power cuts, parents cooking food for customers, then suddenly lights go out and we'd have to shut the shop. But what I still sticks in my mind today is the frequent trashing of our shop by gangs of skinheads, my mother's face bloodied and on the floor and NF stickers and posters and swastika spray painted everywhere. No one came to help and not even the customers whose food we were cooking. This died out during the 80's. So society pre-Thatcher, prejudice, violence, militant strikers, mountains of rubbish, no thanks, people and society today is a lot more pleasant today than it was back then.

Or do you expect us to believe that at 12 years old you were interested in socio economic studies of the country you lived in? More like you were influenced by your parents like all kids and have vague recollections of one or two events of the time.
You know what? Your posts on here are increasingly nonsensical... have you contracted some degenerative brain disease or something?

I watched Baroness Thatcher's funeral and in common with British tradition for public occasions it was very well done.
It well befitted a person who was such a foremost leader and who did so much to improve the position of this country in the world.
Her absolute loyalty to this country in all things was beyond reproach. Unlike our modern day wimpish politicians she was prepared to do what was necessary for the sake of the people and GB without any concern in improving her own popularity among other world leaders.
One need only look towards her actions in reply to the invasion of the Falkland Islands to understand her steadfast character.

Frankly 'sunshine' you don't have the intelligence to garner my views even if I wrote them in black and white and words of less than three syllables as was evidenced just the other day by you connecting my comment about Hitler to my likening Hitler to Thatcher when it meant absolutely nothng of the sort.

Yeah of course you do. You were 12 in 1979!! How the hell can you have clear memories except those of a child?
Or do you expect us to believe that at 12 years old you were interested in socio economic studies of the country you lived in? More like you were influenced by your parents like all kids and have vague recollections of one or two events of the time.

When I was 20 I was engaged to a girl who's dad was on the picket line at Bentick pit and my old man was a copper on the opposite side of the picket line and that made for some interesting conversations but me and him were always ok.
Overheard a few conversations between him and other miners and Scargill was not at the top of their Xmas card lists. Also my sister was married to a miner at the time and let me tell you he would have kicked Scargill in the b0llock if he'd have been given the chance.

Yep, the father in-law was policing during the miners strike and he got on quite well with a few of them and even made him cups of tea for him and his colleagues. He said that most of the miners he came across wanted to work and were against striking but were forced to strike by their union's militant members and flying pickets.

(accepting the fact the these industries were unviable and needed to close)

Well I am over 50, though not by much though
I can also well remember the Labour government of the 70s.
25,000 hospital bed places were removed in the first two years of the Labour government.
The 1974-9 government imposed the greatest attacks on working class living standards since the depression of the 1930s
Teachers suffered large scale redundancies for the first time in living memory.
Prices doubled between February 1974 and December 1978.
An average of 1,000 jobs a day went in Labour's first three years.
A family of four on average earnings was worse off in 1979 than in 1974
Ambulance personnel on strike
Refuse piled up in the streets as it was not collected
Bodies piled up in warehouses as council workers went on strike
Power cuts most weeks
Fire service on strike
Unions demanding 40% pay rises.
I could go on and on.
Face up to it Chris the country was a bloody mess under Labour and needed sorting out.

I'd be interested to hear what you consider as good things during the 70's that's been eroded since. On balance there was also a lot of bad things from the 70's that's also been eroded.
