Really?

Sell his car for £1500 and spend £6k on a newage STI thats had mods already done, say fuel pump, headers and a remap for example.

First ad I saw in the for sale section and there is a whole lot of car for net £8k spend https://www.scoobynet.com/subaru-444...sive-spec.html

Or this one https://www.scoobynet.com/subaru-444...i-type-uk.html

Net £4k spend and i doubt it will cost £6k for headers, turbo, injectors, pump and remap

RIGHT OK, we seem to be deviating off topic a bit. Yes I could sell my car ( JAY M A - £1500 for my v4 I think not ,try £4k ^^ ) but I would still be where I am now, how was the car treated before? was it thrashed to hell etc etc you will never know. So what I want to do is to get my my classic a good rebuild so I know it is reliable and I will know its limits . what ever scoob you get the engine will need to be rebuilt at some point so selling mine to get a newage just to build the engine in future doesn't seem worth while if I am going for reliability.
As many posts above have said it can be done sub £5-7k he'll I could probably do it half that again by not doing my engine , bolting a bigger turbo and a Fmic and a tune but it won't last
What mattyB has said is correct if I really want 400bhp ( and I do at some point ) it will be when i can do it right. I have the funds now for a rebuild semi/ closed stroker but I can't afford the 6 speed box which I think is the main issue and after rebuild the biggest single cost as it has been said £2-2.5k
What I will do now is get the engine done, which is good for 450bhp+ , get a new turbo a map and tune and i will get it sitting at around 330- 340bhp which means I can keep the standard box maybe upgrade to a newage tmic but everything else is good for it, then when I sell a kidney or one of my kids I can get the breaks,6 spd etc and it will be good for 400bhp. Happy days

For some reason I thought you had a v2 sti.

Whichever way you go it can be done for way under £10k

If you can get £4k for yours and a blob STi can be had for £1600 more then for that £1600 you are getting the 6 speed box, the brakes, AVCS heads and an engine that can take 400HP from the off.

Loads of options

^ I agree, although the classic is the lighter more raw car, so its apples for apples.

Technically you have a 4K car, and your "considering" a 10K spend to get the car where you want it, for £14K you can get one hell of a car, but this thread isnt about this is it?

Whats the car likely to be used for?

Or he could just buy the STI for about £5600 and transplant most of the stuff he needs on to his car and that's his spend done

I really dont think you can compare a 400bhp newage to a 400bhp classic.

Probably the cheapest way to do it is to sell your car for 'X' amount and then save up a few more grand and buy a built and proven classic.
However, half of the fun (for me anyway) is actually building your own car. Watching it develop and actually getting your hands dirty.

Unless I'm mistaken a (1470kg) Blob STI vs a (1270kg) classic has obvious flaws. For example a 400BHP Blob will have the same power/weight as a 340BHP classic. And a 400BHP classic will only be matched by a blob with 460BHP.

Do you not get into the realms of having to look at a forge build for 460 on a blob?

Exactly. A 400bhp blob is a slouch compared to a 400bhp classic. And like you say, will need another 50 or 60 ponies to match it. And even then it wont feel as raw or driver involving as a classic.
Will a 460bhp newage engine run happily for thousands of miles, maybe, but getting towards the point of a forged build time for sure.
