Id say thats part of the job of butter, a grease layer to avoid moisture absorbtion?

Yeah butter provides a better barrier than mayo and avoid things like tomato unless it's between dried lettuce leaves. Fillers are usually high in mayo to stop absorption as well.

Cheese is a good filller as well.

Ok.

I had to buy a Ginster sandwich today as I didn't have time to make my own this morning. It was cheese and onion (again!) with regular and Gloucestershire cheese. It was damn nice for £1:99 ( dearer than the Tesco one, but nicer in taste). I read the ingredients on the pack. They use special mayonnaise with mustard powder in it They also add fresh cream to the filling. So basically, taste comes at the cost of becoming obese. Whopping 449 calories in a butty, heart attack beckons.

I did open the butty to check how much butter they slapped on, to make the bread slices sog-proof inside. I hardly found any. I reckon that special mayonnaise did the job there.

How is Subway a rip off?

£3 for a 6" Sub stuffed to the brim on fresh bread with a drink is hardly a rip off. Bloody bargain i'd say.

Subway's sliced meat is poor - can't taste the difference between their ham and turkey, that's where they are cutting corners.

A good deli is the best place - but tend to be few and far between. I can think of 2 within a 30 mile drive of here - on the way you would prob pass 30 other shops etc... but when I get there, pastrami, hommus, feta, black olives..

Best pre packed sarnies are Booths. Only N/W england though.
Next best are, IMHO, M&S. Followed by Sainsburys.
Asda are worst and Tesco not far behind.

Cant stand Greggs, too much pepper in everything.

Subway, eaten too much of it over the years so dont bother any more - but if you were specific about salad / dressings etc they can be quite nice. I find the bread strange though - its almost not bread...

dunno if any of you have ever been up the buckingham industrial estate, but oposite the superchips HQ, is a cafe called munchies, it wipes the floor with the likes of subway etc, cajun chicken with cheese and ketchup in french stick... nom nom nom!

I have eaten Subway sandwiches 3 times by now since we had their shop in our town. Last one was with olives, chicken, jalapenos and I can't remember what else. It was alright, actually.

The best sandwich I have had is from a deli-***-eaterie in Wrexham. I don't think it exists any more, but it was bang in the middle of the town next to Marks n' Spa. They roasted huge beef joints until 3pm every day. Then they sold warm, carved, chunky meat in a butty. They'd stick some fried onions and mustard sauce in as well, if you liked. That was the best ever butty I ever ate in my whole life!

Subway is decent enough but preferred sub of the week for £2 over current deal. They also seem to give you less salad these days. Problem is the calories. From memory a BMT is around 1200 calories if you take herb & cheese bread, cheese abd chipotle sauce. About the same as a mcdonalds quarter pounder meal.

Great fillings and you can have as many as you want About £2.50 too. Bargain!
