We now have three wheelie bins, black for non-recyclables, green for garden waste and a third for clean paper (with its own separate container inside) and everything else (metal, Tetra-Pak, cardboard, plastics).

All are collected on a rotational fortnightly timetable, and I think the council are doing a great job with them. There's no metal in ours at present though as I'm doing a year long experiment to see how much it's worth weighing it in (probably only about a tenner!)

It's a half-arsed attempt unless non-domestic properties are also towing the line.

Hospitals, schools, universities, workplace canteens, restaurants, hotels, pubs etc all produce more waste than a domestic kitchen.

the cost of the recycling is greater than the benefit and the only way they can claim it is saving money is by creating a Tax on landfill.

Its mad the government imposes a tax on its self to justify all the extra cost it then charges tax payers in council tax to try and cover the extra costs of recycling

Exactly - and yet nobody "in charge" seems to realise this!

The economics might not be perfect, but sending compostable/burnable food waste to landfill is nonsensical as is sending recyclable metals, plastics and paper items to the tip. Money isn't real and the earth's resources aren't infinite whilst the consuming human population is spiralling upwards. If everyone did the minimum it would make a massive difference. We can't preach to China and the developing world if we don't pull our fingers out of our own *****.

So by recycling our potato peelings we can feel justified in telling them to stop burning coal.

Well it lasted a few months for me

Then the bin men started not bothering to empty it ,so I stop bothering as well. Goes in with main black bags - and is taken away

Don't think neighbors ever attempted it, most their bins are located about the undergrowth .

Anyone who is conscientious enough to do it will likely have compost heap anyway to my mind. And why wouldnt food waste be need to rot down the main rubbish anyway!?

Neighbors don't even bother with rest recycling since being a windy street tin cans get blown away, The recycling people not allowed to step into your front patio

Ours works perfectly.

We have:

Green Bin: Food and Garden Waste (collected weekly)
Brown Bin: Metals / Cans / Plastic etc (2 weekly)
Blue Bin: Paper (3 weekly)
Black Bin: General Waste (2 weekly)

At first I resented having to separate it all but now its seems much easier. Although we have to have 2 Brown (can/bottle) bins as we fill them up so fast.... Mostly with 2ltr Diet Coke bottles but i bet the neighbours think its Beer cans lol

I take rest recycling to the recycling along with work waste,

Since the jobsworth recyclers can't be arsed, I think they've decided nobody in the street recycles so simple miss the street out in fact I know they do
