Life after the loss of a beloved pet

an animals life has value at all times and on many occassions it will have greater value than things around it, but there are occassions- like the one described- where that animal is up against something of greater value, a child.

I can't believe that I read this.
"Dsmith, FYI, I come round that corner and my dog runs out
from the left, a toddler from the right and I have no where to go?
Notwithstanding that they should both be under better control, I swerve to miss my dog and face the consequences of potentially hitting the toddler.
Not because I am an animal rights activist, but because my dog means more to me than someone elses kid."
You are seriously telling me that you, given the choice, you would rather kill someone's son/daughter than kill your dog ??
You have to be joking.
I have 2 kids and the thought that there are people who think like you do in what is supposed to be a civilised and modern society, scares the life out of me.
I realise that your PET means a lot to you but I'm 100% sure that if you were to have kids then you would understand that the value of an animal life is insignificant compared to that of a human.
And as for showing you a kid that shows unconditional love I could introduce you to my kids but I would rather not as I don't feel that you would show them the respest that they would show you.
I am honestly appauled and shocked and suggest that you have kids so that you understand the true meaning of love

I don't think that anyone who puts the life of a pet above the life of a child should have kids to find out what the true meaning of love is. A point we shall have to differ on I think. But then again who am I to judge what others should and shouldn't do.

Blimey just reread this thread - what happened? I have to say that I did laugh at Cem's gerbil and Cyril the Squirrel - sorry couldn't help it ![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
As regards the other points - we're all entitled to an opinion - good or bad. What is quite interesting is how we come to form those opinions. We (generally) consider a child's life to be more important than that of pet (dog or cat or whatever) Why is that? Most people on here probably eat meat - yet many vegetarians would consider us barbaric. Given that, where do you stand on countries like South Korea who eat dogs (or the French who love a nice horse steak)?
How do you put value on someone / somethings life. Ask yourself this: Would you, for say £10m, press a button knowing that in doing so a person in a remote part of (say) China would drop dead. There would be no comeback or recrimination and you would get enough money to make your self financially secure. Replace the person with an animal (dog or cat) - would you press the button now? How do you justify your answers?
My point is how we are conditioned by society / upbringing to give different values to different animals or individuals. Surely the value you place on a person / animal is directly related to what that person or animal means to you? I don't necessarily agree with Diablo, but I can see where he is coming from. In actual fact I think he has been a lot more honest than many people.

Diblo,
So my views are disgusting and immoral? Who are you to preach morality? Moderating is a difficult call. We don't judge posts based on our views, we moderate based on libel, slander, obscenity, racism and reported (to us) offensiveness. Sometimes its a difficult call and there are many gray areas, but any posts I have edited or deleted have been done so for reasons as quoted. I have never deleted a post by someone who expressed an opinion which I did not personally agree with.
Who am i I to breach morality? Someone who wouldn't kill a human over an animal - thats who bucko.
As for obscenity, and offensiveness and gray areas - Gee let me think....Dog, Human, Dog, Human.....
It's not exactly Rocket Science is it?
I am sure you have posted views that were contrary to mine or which I may have found offensive, but I didn't come on here shouting about it.
Are you sure are you? Then find em....go on run along now, like a good little moderator.....
[SERIOUS]
I find your views to be so extreme that I deemed it necesary to tell you - go figure, if you put em out there jim bob, dont expect nothing to come back - you clever man you
Guess I struck a nerve did I...hmmm....
[/SERIOUS]
Fine, away and vomit, its your call.
That'll be the mature bit of your post then will it.....
And don't call me sonny.
Ok then, shall I call you Eugene Terreblanch, or Charles Manson, or Ted Bundy, they all had 'different' views too didn't they eh......

I think all diablo was trying to say before you cornered him was he loves his pet as much as everyone loves there child, wife, family & pets. Whats wrong with that
He said
Not because I am an animal rights activist, but because my dog means more to me than someone elses kid
But to say that you would choose to kill someone elses child over your dog is seriously worrying.

I think it is about time this thread was deleted.
When I first started visiting SN I thought everyone was nice, and that it made a change from msg boards/chat rooms full of immature teenagers calling everyone homos.
FFS All life is valuable, and have some respect - remember why this thread was started.

I remember a debate that we had at school.
To cut a long story short, it was over animal testing for medicines etc, etc.
What we were asked to do was to decide which side we wanted to debate for, after doing that, we had a go preparing the debate.
The next day, after much preparation we were asked to swap sides and debate for the other side.
I am not going to throw in what my view was because that is now irrelevant. What I would like to tell you is what I learnt from the debate as a mere 14 year old.
It is very hard to put yourselves in someone else's shoes, it is even harder to try to argue the toss about a subject that you do not fully believe in or support.
After the debate finished I realised that no matter how hard I tried to defend my views or throw them on people, I would not change the true views and values of others.
Instead, I learnt that other people were entitled to their views and they were to be respected for that. This lesson has followed me from then on. Although sometimes I struggle to understand a view or disagree entirely, it is not my place to make them change their view or to be derogatory towards them because of it.
Michelle.
(There are subjects that I do not condone at all, but they are nothing to do with this thread)

Well having wasted time reading this topic from start to finish I'm probably the most stupid one here ![Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)](images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)
Molds comment is correct.
The thread started as someone was distressed by their loss and looked to this community for reassurance and support. Doesn't matter if its the loss of their Granny or a pet spider the emotional turmoil was the important factor.
This slanging match and the associated personal abuse could have been taken elsewhere. At least I learned that if I'm distraught it's pointless looking for help here

I dont know geoff, but surely calling his recent loss a "flea bag" is a bit insensitive, given the timing, even if you are a mate.
I totally agree with the banshi/mold. Can we pls try sticking to the topic and helping the guy, and not starting another b1tching match that isnt helping him or anyone else for that matter.
