I'm also a member over on CS, driven a couple 182's and as others have said they are a really decent performance bargain these days.

I'm currently driving a 1.4 16v as my daily/inbetween car, even that is fun to potter about in and great on fuel which is perfect for me while I decide on what I'm going for next

Also a few have mentioned FF after the 182, what's that all about. I assuming not all have it?

what are the cup packs and how do you tell it's got them, as said by a post earlier he was told it had it but didn't so how can you be sure

FF=full fat, has anathracite alloys, cup sus, cup spoiler and splitter

I used to get 36mpg on a run. About 26-28 round then town.

Are the cup packs worth holding out for, I guess one is the visual stuff just is the suspension pack that much better

It's just I'm considering selling up and leaving impreza ownership for the foreseeable future and been thinking of one of these

Suspension cup pack is a must IMO.

Styling cup pack is spoiler and splitter
Suspension pack is anthracite alloys, with Michelin pilot exalto 2 rubber. Larger front hubs, wider front track, 5mm lower ride height and uprated dampers and spring rates.

A FF is a superb daily drive, auto xenons, auto wipers, cruise, half leather/alcantara trim and full digital climate control all standard.

As for MPG, took mine to Snetterton 300 and over that weekend averaged 33mpg, as a daily I see 39mpg and on a long run I get 44mpg.

Superb car, done 40k in mine now inc Snetterton and the Nurburgring and would buy another in a heartbeat. Just make sure it's had regular servicing inc the cam,aux belts.

Phase 1 for low miles and track use. Phase 2 for a more every day car with the odd track thrown in. Mpg very good even when pedalling quickly. The only thing I used to think about was when is it going to break? (French and all that) in three years and after 5 trackdays in the mixture of clios I owned they didn't. Very suprised as I work in the trade and generally French cars are a pain in the *** lol. Parts are cheap ish but modding is a money pit, they don't respond well to filters and exhaust. 'If' I was to get another I'd concentrate more on handling and stopping, as they are the areas they do very well in. 3k would buy you a nice ff182 with sensible miles and fsh. The cup additions arnt worth a look tbh, they offer no real world benefits. Going from a impreza to a Clio would be like going from a Clio to a 107 in regards running costs. I love the 107 as they cost not alot to have fun in. If you relate that story when considering buying a 182 you will understand. Hope that helps and I highly recommend cliosport.net great bunch

I had a 172 and although I only drove it a few times it was a cracking car, only sold it as I have a bad back and the seats had me in agony.

I'd definitely have another one, but would go for the Trophy model, purely for the Trendline seats

I disagree re the cup suspension. I think that's what makes the 182 so special.

I used to have a 172 cup. Fantastic handling car and used to get 36mpg too. Used to destroy my mates mini cooper S on the straight and then leave him like a fly in the mirror in the bends.
Go for it but like everyone else says, forget trophy, just get the cup packs on 182

Incredible car, and sadly going up for sale soon to fund my project car. FRSH with the dealer that sold the car new (same place I bought it from used), 49k, belts done etc. Going to ask £5995 Ono for her.

The Sachs dampers are firm, but not stupidly so - too many cars are rock hard which stops them being 'fluid' on your average B road. The Recaro's are the most comfortable seat I've sat in in a car, if you can find a FF 182 with them it's worth the extra money. I can't comment on how a Trophy performs on a track as I mollycoddle my one too much to abuse it like that!

I suppose an easy way to sum up a Trophy is like a 205 GTi (I've had a few) but with every aspect of it made 100% better. With aircon. And cruise control.

That on cliosport? Cup suspension on a 182 is not a great seller. The 172 cup on the other hand is a cracking car, another which I would own

The cup suspensions larger hubs has a different bolt spacing for the dampers. The choice of coilovers that fit the larger hubs are limited to more expensive brands. So the slammed brigade who want to fit cheap crap dampers don't like the cup packed cars as much.
When I took my 100% stock 182 to Snetterton I had a passenger and a full weight car. We didn't get passed all day by a single car. Many of which were stripped out with coilovers, cams and all sorts of "hurry up" parts.
The oem cup chassis is superb IMO until you put track tyres on it and start asking for big G force cornering. Then it starts to show its weakness with roll.

The damping on regular British B roads and lanes is very compliant and skims over rough roads well. Much more user friendly than both generations of fiesta ST and 500 Abarth.
Id love to lower mine slightly for looks but simply wont alter the suspension because it drives so good as standard.

Go drive one and make up you own mind.

Frayz is spot on; my LY car had a non-Cup chassis but my RB has, difference is night and day. More planted, quicker turn in, more feedback...more fun. I'm firmly of the opinion that people that claim the Cup chassis is not a necessity either haven't driven both variants or are Miss Daisy

It also comes down to how good the driver is, but thats a thread for another day lol. Like above go and drive one and see what you think. They are pretty boring (quiet) as standard so dont let that put you off. My very first arctic blue one i bought years ago i hated it as soon as i drove it away. Nothing wrong with the car it was immaculate with low miles etc. But coming from a loud impreza it felt just like a normal car. Worth a try at least

Easiest way to explain, there are three flavours of 182;

Cup,
Full Fat,
Trophy.

Cup has basic cloth interior but both Cup packs (chassis and styling),
Full Fat has half leather\alcantara interior, Xeons, auto lights, auto wipers, cruise control. Options were Cup packs, Reccaros and Sat Nav,
Trophy has basic interior but Reccaros and both Cup packs as standard, expensive Sachs dampers, Turinis and a larger rear wing.

Think that is about right.

lol at you lot, I meant the car itself is just not big enough for me the boot etc, I'm a load lugger so need a decent sized car, at 5'11 I can fit in most cars, and used to love fiesta XR2's and pug 205's back in the day before mrs, kid, dogs and driving across europe with a car full of clobber.

still on my ph2 172 its still going!! have to spend a few £££ here and there
but overall its a fun car with a bit of ooomph

Apart from the steering feel. Nothing has matched my old 205 1.9 for what you could feel through the steering wheel (in a good way!) . You felt every little crack in the road I swear that you could read braille if you wanted. You couldn't beat the low down grunt (from as little as 1,500) either. Happy days......

A non-PAS 205 then yes I agree, but a I actually think the Clio's are better than a PAS equipped 205 in that department, it's what sold me the car truth be told.

I've had two brand new Clio cups in years past. On quick B road driving I missed lack of feel and feared a graveyard might come my way too soon..

Had a 172 non cup which was ok. 100% reliable and well equipped and quickish!
In all honesty the performance was ok but I was uncomfortable with the lack of weight over the rear of the car off the back of an Impreza an an Elise. The Fabia VRS which replaced it in the real world is not much slower and way more tuneable if that's your thing with economy mixed in.
Would I have another? - No
