Yes. French cars an be woefully more troublesome, especially if you buy a bad egg (and there's alot of them).

Even Fords that use the very same engine are more reliable than their Peugeot Citroen counterparts

Unfortunately that same engine ain't great when it goes wrong either: For example, this week alone I currently have a 5yr old Pug with a DW10UTED4 (RHK) thats failed (seized) and the owner swapped it. Unfortunatly that brought on new issues as the owner fitted (DIY) the wrong spec engine.

Also I have a 3 yr old DV6 engine (1.6hdi) which is currently been removed due to what sounds like a piston/ring problem. You see this engine in pretty much every 1.6 diesel Ford, PSA, Mazda, Fiat, Mini, Suzuki etc..Weird thing is we service a fleet of Ford Focuses with this engine that are all over 100,000k miles (they do over 50,000miles a year) and not one has missed a beat (bar one with a bulkhead leak)...yet in rolls a newer Peugeot Partner MPV with less miles thats literally falling apart.

Then, round in the back (grave)yard I have a Megane with a dodgy dephaser. Another Megane which we bought off its owner and is used as a runabout, we can't sell it on due to its continuous plethroa of eletrical issues. A dead Clio. A dead Fiat Scudo (french engine) which runs on 3 cylinders - its being scrapped. The only exception is a twelve year old VW polo with 150,000miles thats got a ECU fault that causes it to flood and foul the spark plugs every now and again - still usable though.

Oh...and a Seat Marbella (i.e Fiat)...the less said about that the better (just have to touch it and something breaks)

Saturday or Sunday afternoon would be a good time to pop back to the dealers with a smoking car, you could even put one of those nice A4 sheets of information in the window so everyone can read all about it. I bet if you insist on a loan car then, you'll get one.

If its a French car, the response would most likely be "We give Up".

Think I'll stick to my BMW Mini Cooper D Clubman then. 45 mpg on short shopping journeys and is very nice to drive too.

UPDATE.

Finally had enough of the car still going strong although there is clear evidence that it isn't right, and at some point it WILL fail as its getting worse! Today I put in three kettle loads of water, which eventually when the thermostat opened it chucked on he floor ;(

I've called the RAC, they have been here for an hour trying to fix the problem which stems from a hose sprung clip (jubilee style) wasn't even on at the right point, period! It's clearly been loosened for the previous work down the hose, and have slid it mid way down the pipe, then when replacing and relocating the hoses they haven't even pushed the clip up, it's still mid way on the hose! Another issue now is that it appears the inlets and outlets are mixed up, so the system is circulating coolant around the engine only, well what is left of it, thus why it hasn't seized yet, and no warm water/in car heating! The radiator isn't getting warm one bit. Maybe it's just a serious air lock, but the RAC thinks not.

Courtesy car just landed!

It's shocking really the standard of work, and lack of knowledge of the mechanics at this particular garage,

My mum many moons ago, taught me the most powerful disgruntled customer ploy is to stand outside the shop and tell your story to anyone that will listen, in particular those about to enter said shop, it's worked for me on numerous occasions.

Funny how refunds and services that weren't available or possible suddenly materialise.

Renault just called me, to inform me that they had my car and asked what is was brought in for? I said your the so called mechanic, run it and find out! Turns out too that the said guy on the phone was the same guy I spoke too in person when I last went and got fobbed off lol.

I couldn't resist in telling him that a hose had cone off dropping all the coolant, and that this hose failing was the result of your garages poor work. (The phone went quiet). I also informed them that I've contacted Renault assists head office to lodge a complaint, not a complaint of things going wrong, but a complaint of the level of poor service

my brother once complained about very poor service he had received from a HP reseller in the mid 90's - he was at the trade collection counter

he demanded a B/W Inject printer as compensation -- the Operations Manger finally came to speak to him (after he had asked to spk to the Organ Grinder)

who rather smuggly said - "we do not have any B/W printers in stock sir"

"fine, a colour one will have to do" said my brother

and it did

As far as i can see very little of your issues are Renaults fault.

Speak to Renault customer services and you will find them very helpful, they will speak to the dealership you have been dealing with and make sure your issues are sorted.

As for the mass of comments of how shat Renaults i'm afraid that just isnt the case, maybe years ago but now they are as good as any other manufacturer and better than alot.

The only engine i can think of that i have seen with oil pump issues in a one of the many jap engines Renault use. What engine is it?

Never owned a Renault and when looking for a replacement for my written off Xsara Coupe I was put off the Meganes by poor reviews.

But I've had 5 French cars in total and apart from a 22 year old 205GTi, all have been more than reliable. Two 106's, said 205GTi, a 406 and said Xsara. The HDi engines are a dream and the electrics have never been problematic for me either. As for Renault...? Pass.

Best of luck, rob

Not much fun though
What about the flaps in the manifold breaking off working their way through the engine and boom! Check it out on bmworld!
