She liked the company of children, despite her size, she was very gentle around them although never left unattened with them. I had no concerns about her being aggressive at all. This changed on a morning when I went out with both my dogs to feed them, she saw a cat on top of the fence that surrounded my house. She ran at the fence, the cat either fell, or jumped into my garden, she turned and chased it catching it behind the shed. This resulted in the worst possible outcome for the cat. From that day my view and perception of my own dog and what she was capable of changed. I learned that all breeds have a base set of instincts, these can be heighted or surpressed to a certain extend based on how the dog is treated or allowed to behave, however they can not be eradicated. Her inbuilt hunt / chase instinct took over, and she did what was natural to her.

This is an excellent post and deserves massive credit to to the poster.
Prior to your witnessing the attack I will lay money that you were of the opinion that your freindly, family dog wouldn't hurt a fly.

Same as all other dog owners believe that to be true.

Does annoy me when some gets attacked by a Staffie they never say the dog has been brought up rough and wrongly or was getting a beating, it's always the family pet turned

Anyway here's Tyrone....
A Staffy called Tyrone, Jeez you aren't even trying to avoid the stereotypes.
At least you didn't go for Tyson as a name

Not at all if they have anything of substance between their ears.
I have now had 5 German Shepherds, male & female, my current one is just a year old next week.
They have all been great dogs and good friends but I wouldn't have trusted any one of them not to turn to their natural instincts when the fancy took them and circumstances were right.
Anybody who believes their dog to be totally trustworthy and that they have completely taken the hunting instinct out of any dog shouldn't own one in my opinion.
This my dog Sonny at 9 months.

Much as I love him I would trust him as far as I could throw him, and that's not very far

Bit of a unfair comment this, my dog spends all day playing with my kids and our cat, she's a GSD and of a lovely temperament.

End of the day though she's a dog and I have no doubt she would fight for all she's worth should something trigger in her.

I'd say most owners these days wont let a dog near their kids alone.. I hope I'm right.

Pimmo, sadly when you read back through all the other umpteen dangerous dog threads, it is chock full of dog owners who are genuinely oblivious to the fact that a dog is still and animal that is capable of reverting to running on instinct.

Yours and the comment I quoted above are refreshing attitudes to read and I genuinely hope that the rest of the owners are being deliberately obtuse and reactionary but sadly this is not the case on the whole and a lot of dog owners believe that their family pet is incapable of harm to others under any circumstance.

Mucho respect to you though.

You all say that no dog is 100% trustworthy, but when you say that are you referring to the more "dangerous" sort of breeds?

Because we have a little Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and I honestly say she could be trusted with anything. It's just her nature and the actual breed of dog. They are very quiet and ours is extremely calm and very affectionate of anybody.

I plan to get a GSD and as mentioned by some comments, that's a dog which I wouldn't trust due to instincts and the nature of the breed regardless of how calm he could be.

I must say that I like dogs a great deal and I wish we lived in an area where it is easy to own one.

At least we have a cat anyway.

I took my dog off some local smackheads as of you are on job seekers they give you a few quid more, they asked me for a bin bag as they walked past so I gave them one
I asked what it was for they said the dog man! I said can't do that I took him then they said if you want him give us £60 for him so I did and that night ****** was on TV so I named him Tyrone...5 years on Tyrone is still by my side best £60 I've ever spent

He was real nervous when I first got him, I he was 5 weeks and my little girl was 5 he didn't come near me that much but he was with her...I didn't really want a dog at the time but he grew on me now he's 5 he ain't changed really just chills out and protects, only Staffie I've seen getting chased by a kitten

He's fine with other dogs and people but he gets a bit funny with strangers near my girls which I guess isn't a bad thing, he just sits near the girls,
I trust him but I never leave him alone with my 9 month girl as you never know!
