You are probably not far wrong Les as it seems very specific to blokes and we know how big male egos are when it comes to driving. Which is backed up by some of the comments on here. One handed driving gods who think they have the reaction times and car control of Sebastian Loeb. Yes we can all drive comfortably with one hand 99.9% of the time but as my dad always said “expect the unexpected”. Things like blow outs, motorway debris, bits falling from lorries etc become so much more of an issue when you can only react with one hand. Travelling around town at 30mph is not the same as 80+ on the motorway.

That’s not what I said at all so not sure why you are trying to twist it that way. I was referring to control and the logical decision for most drivers needing to make an evasive manoeuvre would be to return the spare hand to the steering wheel as quickly as possible. There is clearly a delay between doing that in comparison to already having both hands on the wheel.

Subconsciously i think i actually do tend to keep both hands on the wheel when at speed in traffic but revert back to one handed when conditions are suitable

It's not the one handed people you have to worry about, it's all those people who simply should not own a driving licence due to their complete lack of ability and correct decision making behind the wheel. Since i've been doing a daily mway slog i've been utterly stunned at the atrocious driving of some people

Every police driving instructor as well as the Institute of Advanced Motorists will tell you to have both hands on the wheel as much as possible! Of course they haven't bothered to pop into SN NSR to listen the assembled intelligencia tell them otherwise

I find though, my driving style differs with different vehicles.
In my L200 I generally use one hand - both on the wheel feel uncomfortable for some reason.
In the Porsche, both hands on the wheel due to the hard suspension

I sometimes drive with an arm out the window if its hot as the cool air feels nice, I must therefore be a moron or a pleb, think I'll stop using the car and sit and worry about it all night now.
I knew I shouldn't have bought a subaru its turned me into a complete chod!

Some of the replies on this thread are funny!!
I seriously can't believe someone would paint their toenails whilst driving!!! That's just absolutely unreal. Think I'd have followed her and painted her face with it, stupid bint!!
I am guilty of feet up on the dash in someone else's car!!
I usually drive one-handed, with the other resting on the gearstick, bad habit i know but i had an mr2 and they were practically designed for resting your left arm on the middle! I did actually do the IAM. In the mr2 too lol!!
Anyway, both hands on wheel on motorway.

You should try cutting a piece of MDF with a Swiss army knife whilst driving...

Well at one point today I sat up and used one hand whilst on the zx6r was nice and cooling on my sweaty armpit, I've already accepted my one way ticket to hell.
Anyone that says they keep both hands on the wheel at all times after passing their test is talking ****e IMO, that or have nothing better to do than telling people about it.
Don't leave one hand on the gear stick people, you'll wear your synchros out don't you know!!
Mick

You will really have to do a lot better than that.
I presume that you have no significant experience of riding motor 'bikes. If you had you would realise that what I said about riding the ZX12R on that occasion was absolutely correct and it was actually an interesting experience with no sign of any chance of losing control of the machine.
You must have missed the programme on the TV showing a rider performing all kinds of actions on a motorised unicycle!
