It doesn't have to stop; we are out almost every weekend until the Autumn at various parties and events.
Yes there's a tricky period after kids are born but its fine after that IMO. We met loads of people when abroad for a month too.
The only thing that stops us is our tendency to be epically hopeless at deciding what to do socially. I suspect it annoys our tolerant close mates no end!

Emma, I think it depends on where you work/what the customers are like. We get some lovely ones and I'll spend the time chatting with them, unfortunately, they are more the exception than the rule. It would seem that this isn't the case store to store, so workers in some shops aren't so grumpy.
