You know as well as I do that decent hawk sti's don't come along at 7K very often.
The amount of 2.5's that have had issues should be enough to put anyone off. Now im not saying they all have issues but many do, and after the cost of buying one not everyone can afford to fix the engine if it lets go.
Yeah I do agree that 7k was a very good price but they are out there you just have to be prepared to wait and do all the right checks when one does turn up ,,,,mine was even mapped strait away and still had a 3 month warranty as the dealer knew my mapper ,,,,,
Iv had far more problems with my 2.0ltrs than I have with my 2.5 but it still early days yet but after building quite a few forged engines forging another 2.5 doesn't worry me as it will just make the car even better

Agreed - see the sticky and I personally prefer the cheeky classic in the background sneakily positioned behind the gate.

I feel your pain....
My 06 Hawkeye Sti been fully rebuilt by Alan Jeffery as the HGs went soon after I bought it. It's had some paint, a new rear wing and vane on a genuine STI rear boot lid, (it's a Spec D so came with a low wing) and has BC ER spec long travel coilovers fitted with a few Whiteline bits as well.
Spare Wheels on Winter tyres and full leather interior with touch screen stereo. If I could get £9K for it I'd jump out in a flash.
I suspect I'll be driving it for a long time though.....
The Curse of high fuel costs.....
45,000miles and it's sweet and smooth though- thanks Alan and Martyn!

Hi guys, thanks for all of the comments.
I have seen this on eBay and I think it might tick the boxes. It's a 2.5 sti, but has had super tech forged pistons installed....plus it runs on log with a flash lube kit....I might even consider upping the budget slightly....opinions?

Looks nice, defo best colour!!
Make sure that all the reciepts are there, and defo make sure that the reciepts for pistons are there, and has it had a full re-build or has it just had the pistons replaced!!!
I viewed a few Hawks before I bought mine and you would be suprised how bad they where when you actually got there. Viewed a WR Blue Hawk and the whole side of the car looked like it had not got any clear laquer on the paint, was dull and flat with loads of filler, pictures never actually show the car properly!!!

recently got a standard hawkeye 2.5 WRX with 63k miles and history for 6k, cars in great condition overall, engine running 100% with no leaks, no fluid usage, no funny noises, etc. its already seen off a blob STi with mods (quite an unexpected result), a random evo 7, 8 or 9, not sure (also unexpected) and got walked by a modded/mapped "380bhp" evo 10 with 11k miles so seems even with the lower peak HP figures the 2.5 WRX must have something in its favour between the gearing of the 5 speed, an extra 500cc displacement and a smaller TD04. saying that though you wouldnt know if the blob STi and evo 7/8/9 were running well or not though so i take my surprising results there with a pinch of salt until i happen across some more 2.0 STi's and similar era evo's and see what happens.
regarding the 2.5 being weaker.. i did alot of homework in the short time i have had the car but from what i can see 99% of the failing 2.5's are in the 08 and newer models so would be hatchback impreza and newer. not finding loads of failed hawkeye 2.5 info so must be a little stonger than the newer 2.5's. also as i come from an ECU tuning background from older cars of another make i have started looking into mapping the subaru and reading up on the do's and dont's and it seems like the main cause of 2.5's (in the hawk atleast) grenading pistons or ringlands is lack of tuning for mods, idiot owners no having a clue about modding/tuning, improper or bad tuning or intake plumbing/intercooler becoming coated in oil due to hard cornering and oil being ingested due to that. people who have tuned or own and tune the 2.5's generally sum up the engine as perfectly good and able to make more power but MUST be tuned properly as lean conditions can grenade pistons/ringlands even moreso than on the 2.0's.

Dealer licence to say "Type 20 package".
It's NOT a Type 20, so it's a JDM Spec C.
So it's worth - what a Spec C is worth.
I have to say that I've a vested interest, being lucky enough to own a REAL Type 20 Hawk (with an additional set of wheels and tyres, defis plus colour-coded pod and state-of-the-art ICE - oh, and Trackstar, absolutely FSH, including EVERY petrol receipt).
A fabulously looked after car (by the ultra-fastidious previous and only owner) with only 28K miles (when I bought it), lower tax bracket (£280pa) and one of about 12-16 EVER bred.
And to cap it all, considered good enough to be featured in Total Impreza.
£15,495 for this pretender is too high, but reasonable enough to haggle somewhat.
Sorry, but I'm annoyed that someone's trying to trade on the T20 'brand'.
There was a different seller (and different car) trying it on with a 'Type 25 Spec' angle a couple of months back.
It gets my goat, really does.

Its not a problem related to the STi as far as I know, it's a generic problem with the 2.5 engine having weaker pistons which don't like more than circa 1.35 bar of boost. The reason that it manifests itself in STis is that they have a higher output from the outset and tend to be driven and tuned harder, but if you push a WRX the result is likely to be the same. Keeping the boost levels sensible and not hitting the limiter seems to be the key to keeping them in one piece!

If you want a hawkeye then just go and buy one and don't worry about all the hype about the 2.5 just make sure its been well looked after ,,,7k will get you a hawkeye sti ,I got mine for 7k with low miles and low tax band so they a out there,,,mines on 55k now at 380bhp and is fine so not all 2.5 are defo going to blow up you just have to make sure you know what your looking for when you buy it

allthough the STi and WRX are both 2.5's there are some differences. im not sure if im mentioning all of them but from what i have found the main differences betwen the WRX and STi 2.5 are..
- smaller TD04 turbo on the WRX (is it a VF on the STi?)
- higher compression ratio on the WRX (8.5:1 vs 8.2:1 for the STi i believe)
- slightly different combustion chamber shape between the two

If it's a 2.5 it won't be happy with more than about 1.35bar boost or you'll end up with a cracked piston ringland: with the right mods and a first class map, that much boost will get you circa 350bhp/400lbs torque. Any more on the 2.5 WRX or the STi and you're asking for trouble!

* How does the mapping work? It says switch over from Lpg to petrol at the push of a button - what 'button'?
* Are there any receipts/invoices for remaps?
* No mention of hg upgrade
*'A few wheels show slight kirbing (sic)' but because there's no 'bends or buckles' they are described as 'mint'
* 'The usual scratches and stonechips' - a bit of a casual approach that.
* The mileage might go up slightly - so what if, in those few miles, it got kerbed or splattered with chippings? 'Condtion liable to change' is a more appropriate term imo.
Having said all that I hope you go to view it, you are satisfied with the answers to those questions and end up with years of happy motoring with it. (And fwiw I would as well )
Oh - and it's an 06 plate.
The saving by using lpg should compensate for the extra £200 VED if it comes to it.
