Pretty sure 165 in an r8 would not be that hard to get to and as said its not crime of the century but for the fact of what he said in court the judge should have locked him up lol

Has there been any change in the drivers' personal levels of skill and ability to control a car at very high speeds or in a dangerous situation or speed of reaction.
I think that speed limits are set with that in mind and that is the right way to do it.
Even trains dont always stay on the rails!

They used to test McLarens around Woking - always a good sight.
Dad used to road race a bit in the 80s but nowadays it's a very bad idea - he smoked a cop car in his 928 once - 150, 90 around a roundabout (A3 near Ripley), back down the other way. I have no idea how he got away with it!

If I ever broke the motoring laws around that part of the country I always used to get done for it!

The speed mentioned sounds irresponsible, but if we all get off our high horses & be totally honest, most of us who drive high powered cars have dabbled in the excessive on an empty road.

Fact is that guy was a tool doing 165, I doubt he was experienced handling a high power car, he did not acknowledge how ridiculous that speed is and his attitude in court reflected his careless attitude. People like that are a danger to society behind the wheel of a car and I am massively disappointed the judge displayed leniency in not making him do time.

Mart, 165mph is a bit different to "over 100mph". This isn't someone who has been caught doing 110 or 120 which is pushing it enough, he's been absolutely pedal to the metal reckless.
I know people who have lost their licenses for doing 100mph or more and have felt a bit sorry for them. One of my friends was actually goaded into doing so by an unmarked car on a Lancashire motorway and I am sure that one tried to do it to me once too.
In some of the cars we own a simple overtaking manoeuvre can see us nudge speeds over this 100mph that we see as a big number but there is a huge world of difference between doing that and then relentlessly gunning the gas and putting other peoples' lives at risk.
I genuinely thought there would be more support for the sentence this guy received. I don't care if it was 5am he still could have wiped someone out. It makes me wonder if some of you regularly blast it around at speeds similar to that because a good few of you have cars capable of doing so.
A good few of you seem to think 150mph+ is safe just because it's allowed in Germany. This is a country that used to have nearly 1500 deaths a year on its autobahn alone.
Stats FYI
There were 118 deaths on UK motorways alone in 2010.
In Germany that year there were 430 on the autobahn alone.
Excessive speed has been quoted as the major cause of deaths on the autobahn. They are heavily regulated in terms of lane discipline and tailgating. For a country that is roughly 25% larger than ours in population size that is quite a gulf in stats, though maybe those that see someone doing nearly 100mph over a 70mph speed limit as not a big issue will fail to appreciate that.

I fail to see how some of us are on our high horses for being outraged at someone doing nearly 100mph over the maximum speed limit who could only be caught using a helicopter. There is a difference between dabbling and taking the ****.

Here's an R8 I see an Asian chap hooning about in.

A few weeks ago he reversed off of his drive without looking, almost knocking me off my bike. And that Kebab shop always gives people the ****s. 2 birds, one stone.

thenewgalaxy - by your own admission you havent driven at that speed yet you preach that you have to be very skilled to justify doing it safely. If you've never done it then you dont know. Ive travelled at similar speeds and in the right vehicle its not much different to 100mph anyway. At 5am on a deserted road risking nobody elses life, there isnt a problem other than hes breaking the law and taking the risk at his own expense. Stop being such a ***** about it. So many more things in the world to feel disgusted at

We have no motorways down here but a few dual carriageways and fastish A roads.
Our car isn't the quickest out there by a long way but it soon gets to speeds I consider dangerous; anything over 80 on a smallish road or 100 on a dual carriageway just doesn't feel safe even though the car is totally able to cope.
It's a bit silly going that fast.

This is a pointless thread, the replies on here say to me we have some utter bell end members who have no respect for other road users!
Doing 165mph isn't the issue here, everyone can drive over double the speed limit if they want to risk their license, if this was the only issue I couldn't give a toss! The fact remains you are putting everyone else in Danger.
Lets put it this way, if the R8 caused a serious incident, then we'd all be bleating about how wreckless he was, no applauding him for hitting over a Ton!
Rob
Ps- Should my family ever been harmed by someone doing such an act, I'd hunt you down and you'd wish you'd have expired in the incident

But hes not endangering anyone else if nobody else is around, a puncture at 165mph could be awful but hes only damaging himself and his car

I appreciate he's on his own, and that he could only potential kill himself, but its not him that would be grieving due to his recklessness.
I think we'll agree to disagree in this case, and sorry if I come across all wrong, I've lost a few good friends and a work colleague due to traffic accidents through recklessness, and all were not the fault of the innocent dead party, so its fair to say this kind of topic touches a nerve!
Over and out.

No worries. I just think sometimes people are stuck in the 20th century. Technology has come a long way and people think nothing has changed because they dont accept to go with the times. Im not condoning them speeds on the public highway but as been said, the punishment is pretty severe imo
