it may be that they were going to make you redundant and by handing in your notice you are going to lose redundancy money. the meeting may be to tell you your on the redundancy list.

imho its crazy to hand notice in when there is a chance of winning the redundancy lottery.
If I were you, I'd volunteer for redundancy first. Then if you're not considered, hand in your notice and leave.
I was in a similar situation a few years ago. I knew about the impending redundancies and contacted the HR department to volunteer myself for redundancy, which was accepted. The benefit to this was; I walked away with a nice healthy bank balance, and someone else who needs his job got to stay.
Can't see the problem, you have given a weeks notice so when that's up your done simples. It has nothing to do with someone saying they won't ley you go as its your choice if you stay.
