Api told me to take it easy for the first 1000 miles, using little boost and keeping revs below 4k, my engines now done 2.5k miles and is perfect, dosent use any excess oil either, ive topped up less than half a litre since it was built and it seems to of stopped using any more now as i havent needed to top up in about 4 months.

One thing to remember is the rings only really bed in under engine braking, so the running in process is more about varying engine load, than doing specific mileage at a set rev band. A good run down the motorway will make it easier to vary the engine load etc.

Never heard that before.
Aren't piston rings designed to expand to make a tighter seal under compressive loads? i.e. when the cylinder is making power?

My car used about 250ml oil during the running in period, and after the first oil change at 1000miles probably used around half a litre over the next 2000miles.

Since then she has used nowt.

Opened her up yesterday for the first time in ages, what a glorious thing a forged 2.5 is

 

We advise our customers as follows:

It is fitted with an oil that has few additives as possible when it leaves here. Work it moderately up to 4000 rpm and make it pull against load going up hills to get energy onto the piston crowns and help bed the rings in.

At 1000 miles change oil and filter and if you wish for a semi synthetic of 10W 0r 15W40 OR 10W - 15W 50. ) and 5 is too thin for a Subaru turbo engine working hard. YES!, l know, the handbook says 5W, how often do you read of engines going bang during guarantee??. How many do you read of from API, Engine Tuner , RCM, Clinic, going bang? and we all say the same thing.

Never ever use a flushing oil in a Subaru.

Do that and barring stupidity, the engine will behave properly. Change the oil every 3000 miles anyway with a NEW genuine Subaru Black oil filter.
