I have 24 years welding experience to my name ie I don't boast about what I can do .In all three process's Mig mild steel, Tig ac alu dc mild steel ,stainless, Stick mild steel, cast iron .
Its not a case of some one watching your hands its setting up the plant what power settings for different thickness's of metal wire speeds as well .

The coding bit was a bit sarcastic I only mentioned that with regards welding in the roll cage were your welding in all positions not the plates .The college I thought might be a bit of help to you or if your mate is offering his expertise .Gets some scrap metal and practice setting up the welding plant and set out some weld joint's in different positions

Any welding on cars is usually a ****e job
Thin and cruddy steel ,covered in paint and seam sealer
, it goes without saying really , one of the most important aspects of a nice weld is cleaning the weld area , more so on cars , spend as much time as possible to get it as clean as possible
