That's a pretty good suggestion!.
I've got somewhere flat just around the corner though so it's not so bad.

It's never actually needed topping up but I like to check

How do you know it's flat?

I can't believe this thread.
A prerequisite for taking oil level is er..... a bl**dy spirit level !!!!!!!!!!!!

Subaru Owner's Manual:

Checking Oil Level:

1) Put car on level ground;
2) Ensure ground is level by putting spirit level halfway between front and rear tyres;
3) Ensure spirit level is correctly positioned by measuring distance between front wheels and spirit level and spirit level and rear wheels;
4) use a certificated measuring instrument to verify (3) above;
5) Reference Scoobynet and determine which method of measurement you wish to apply to determine depth of oil within sump.
6) Apply said method.
7) Post and see how many agree.

I doubt normal visual flat or spirit level flat would make a lot of difference on the dip stick, but i wouldn't bother dipping on my drive way, thats more than a few degrees slope.

Visual or spiritual wouldn't make any difference the slippery slope I've gone down (again) tonight.

Classic mistake of only checking the level between front and rear wheels. To ensure accuracy the level must be checked between the front nearside and offside wheels too. Also allowance must be made for fluctuations in barometric pressure.
