When I was growing up, we had the likes of Street Fighter etc. and they weren't even realistic at the time, so I very much doubt any child was really influenced by them.

The more recent GTA games are realistic and graphic, with content simply not suitable for younger children.

You say that, but I remember playing street fighter and mortal combat in the park .. did us no harm apart from a few slaps, but progress that to GTA.

All it takes is for one kid to be influenced, worth the risk of that kid being yours?

If you could have had a discussion with the parents of the James Bulgar murderers the day before they carried out their brutal attacks do you think they would have thought their kids were capable of such an atrocity?

Somehow I can't see them saying "yeah, my kids is a f***ing psycho and needs help".

My son can also shoot a junior modified 410 shotgun and drive a quad......will playing gta turn him into a joyriding car thief that does drive by shootings

Time will tell , bar a few tantrums off him he is well behaved and so polite

Out of curiosity, how old are you?
Would your parents have let you play GTA5 when you were 4 years old?

You say there is no right and wrong in how a kid is parented, that isn't strictly true, if we are being pedantic, you're saying that it's not wrong for a parent to beat (not talking a slap here, a proper beating) a child if they step out of line. Obviously that's not what your phrase meant, but as said, we're being pedantic here.

I think his mother is quite correct, he should NOT be playing a game that is not intended for his age. It's not as if he's 16 and going out for a crafty pint or to an 18 rated movie. He is 14 years below the age limit set for the game, and that is a rather large gap.

You, or I for that matter do not know exactly what playing this game will do to him in a few years. Others have said kids are like sponges, they soak up things, and I really don't think exposing him to this game at such a young age is a wise move. He does not NEED to play such a game, I'm sure some other game appropriate for his age would keep him more than occupied.

Answering the actual question, no, I would not let my son at aged 12 play an 18 rated game. I'm sure there would be lots of shouting and moaning, but my house, my rules. I'm the parent he is still the child.

Letting a 4 year old play it is simply wrong and utterly irresponsible parenting. It is ruining their childhood and their innocence at such an early age. Although by the sounds of it that kids innocence probably went long ago if playing GTA V is acceptable I'm afraid it says a lot about someone who thinks a 4 year old is OK hearing that language let alone anything else in the game.

If you want him to enjoy driving cars about get him a driving game FFS. 4 year olds should be playing with toys and out on their bikes not playing GTA V

To the OP. Yes. All his friends are playing it. I remember reading once that the over protective parents always produce the best liars.

There is nothing positive to be gained from such games, only potential negatives.

When there are so many worthwhile things to expose your kids to ie literature, science, music, languages, sport etc anybody who decides to let their small child play violent, sexualized video games is worthless ****.
I'm not trying to justify any good or bad parent level (IMO you've already failed if you're kids stuck in front of a screen), merely weighing in that the scale of the potential negatives is over inflated hyperbole that people reckon, not backed up by any sound scientific basis.

Aren't you the same guy who was telling us just a few posts ago that
"One thing's for sure, video games have not yet become photorealistic and fully immersive like the fully fledged virtual environments might be in the future."?

That's nothing more than your opinion, and I'm pretty sure that most people with any clue as to how massively the realism of video games has improved in the past 5 or 10 years would soundly disagree with.

Things were a lot more innocent when I was younger. I remember when we were about 12 we were hunting for a copy of strip poker on ZX Spectrum, a fabled and possibly never actually made game. Now you can play GTAV and go to an actual strip club, have **** giggled in your face, grope the stripper and take them home lol.

Pretty graphic. If it is true a 4 year old plays these scenes in a game, I think social services need to be involved with the family. That's shocking parenting if true.

That is a tiny bit extreme for a game (sarcasm obviously). It seems the parent of the 4yr old hasn't posted since (I think) on this thread. Really would like to know their age, and if their parents would have allowed them to play such a game.

TBH I'm surprised there's not more of an outcry about dogs (and being able to kill them presumably) being in the game, I would have thought PETA would be all over it, or maybe they have and I just haven't heard about it?

I haven't tried to do so, even in a game it feels wrong! But I'm sure it's possible. Funny how even though I know it's a game I still bring real-world morals into the game with me which dictates how I play it.

Can only assume this is also the reason there's no children in the game too.

I think dogs are a minor issue compared to the myriad ways in which humans can be brutalised or killed in this game.

As for letting a 4 year old or a twelve year old play it - no way. Only a grade A moron would see that as acceptable or normal. I'm kind of hopeful that the "4 year old" poster was just a troll as that is preferable to believing that they could be that fcuked up in reality.

Frankly reading this thread, I think some of the "adults" who play this "game" shouldn't be allowed to play it either.

Gta again lol.

Remember listening on the radio about this game sometime ago,and parents were being shown what the game play actually involves.some parents were buying this game for their kids and not even knowing anything about the game, until they were shown and then interviewed about it on the radio, and these parents didn't appear to sound like the low life don't give a crap type.Grew up playing console/PC games, and used to play gta all the time on ps.Stealing a fire engine and ploughing through the streets with dozens of cops chasing you was quite funny in a way.
Certainly don't reckon i let my 4yr old play it though,maybe 14/15.
I'd say to any parent now a days in this situation play or see the games for yourself.youtube is full of video content of these games, and it's so easy to go look..

Having played this game and completed it, i would NEVER EVER let any child play this game, When i was a kid and not so long ago(im 26) i never played games like this, i was out playing rugby and this taught me alot respect towards other people and adults(refs). Games i did play as i child was the likes of Gran turismo ect. Or i be on my stateboard, rollerblades ect which is what a child should be playing.

People say it your child and you can bring them up how you like, well no thats not true, you have a morale oblication to bring that child up right way, not find it acceptable to not work, steal, swear ect

To the person that allows there 4 year old to play, shame on you, shocking and agree with socal services being called!
My brother has 5 year old, he plays cars 2 and has own model car garage and plays with lorrys, that kind thing children should play with, not a game that kills people and give the impression that it ok to do all this for your ``hommies`` or your `hood`.

A girl I have on facebook (no idea how) posted a picture a couple of days after it came out of her 4 or 5 year old playing it. Totally ridiculous. I actually laughed quite a bit at it. Would post it here for you all to laugh at too but am not going to post a picture of someone else's kid. Talk about scum. She actually commented about how cute he looked playing it. "That's it, Declan, murder that prostitute."

i have said before that my 5 and 9 year old play an old copy of gta (donnyandy has the 4yo), they usually use 'cheats' to get tanks and stuff and mainly drive around and crash cars.

for his 10 birthday, he has asked for GTA5, i have never played the game and was gonna get it for him, but after seeing the reviews and footage, i have got him fifa 14 instead

and 'no' i'm not a council scrubber and the xbox is not a babysitter. I'm an electrician and i earn enough money that my house is nearly paid off and my wife doesn't have to work
