You can't compare a 22B with a GTR, two completely different cars that apeal to different people. A better comparison would be a 22B and a lovely late intergrale evo 2. And we all know how much money a mint low mile one of them is worth.
Imagine you're at a subaru meet, park a 22B up and it'll get all the attention regardless of what else is there.

The GTR is very fast but supremely dull, something that I don't think could be levelled at the 22B. Then again I last drove one eleven years ago so my memory of it is somewhat clouded
A point for thought though, if those early GTRs drop much further anytime soon that's going to be one hell of a cheap way to go mentally fast.

I'm not a 22B fan, but i'd definitely go for one over a GTR because your only going to lose money on a £35k GTR over 2/3yrs probably circa £10k and the running costs at that price point are going to be high.
The 22B on the other hand will only go up in value or remain the same over a similar period, and has standard subaru running costs.

but the running costs, yes. New set of headlamps for a 22b - £100? for the GTR £2500 or something like that

You would only be buying that car if your a collector or hoping to make profit down the line.
This car isn't for joe blogs to buy and take out every weekend, it's a collectors car and I hope it stays in that condition for many many more years

It's funny to see how many praise it like that . Yes , it's got heritage and it's a superb car , but in a real world for folks like me how would it be beneficial? Do you buy your cars to brag to your friends or showing it off in meets or to use the properly? How many of us could possibly have it and use it? I'd be scared to take it on a track as if you or someone damages it it looses the value straight away. I'd say , it's more of an investment or a collectors item , not the car to be used for what it meant to be used anymore IMO ofcourse ...

I've contemplated chopping mine in for a few cars, a GTR and a 6.3 AMG but would I get the same attention from them, would I get the same smile every time I drove it? Maybe, maybe not. I love driving my car but it's the thought that some idiot could crash into it, dent it, or whatever. Only done 260 odd miles in 5 months but I'm happy just looking at it and cleaning it.

Very true, agreed, but if im spending 35k, and for me, it would be once in a lifetime opportunity, i want something that is special to sit in as well to drive. The 22b is the same as my old V4 Type R inside, and that was crummy to say the least but that was 6k on a car, not 35!
You don't buy an impreza as its nice to look at or sit in and you certainly don't spend 35K on one if thats what you want from a car. Owning a 22B is for completely different reasons.
Real subaru enthusiasts understand what im trying to get across and im not having a dig at you either.
If you had that kind of money to spend on a performance car you wouldn't choose an impreza, I get that and totally understand your reasons. But me, I'd happily spend 35K on a beautiful 22B because owning and driving an iconic car like that would give me more pleasure than owning and driving a 600bhp Datsun GTR.

More about the experience and road presence than what the car can actually do.
It will allways be the holy grail of any serious Subaru owner an iconic car .

Attention seekers , lol ... Probably 2 sides of enthusiasts too, the ones who use them and the one's who polish them half a day to drive throught the town with the windows down and elbows out .

In an ideal world we'd all have about 3 cars wouldn't we? A nice diesel to pop to work in, a toy for the weekend and something with legendary status that never see's rain.
I think this seperates a car enthusiast from a "petrol-head". I know of at least 2 GTR's I see all the time, very nice but hardly "dream car".

I do respect other opinions , Your yellow is my green , and there's nothing wrong with it , just please stop makeing your one is right and my one is wrong thingy . That's all .... It just makes me wonder how much of Iconic is this example and why , cause of flared arches or some advanced technology, won chapionships etc etc?
Wasn't the MCrae navy blue 96 classic and the leggy most Iconic of them all? I'm short on this history so maybe can someone can put some light in it? It's a genuine question BTW ...

That's why I have a V3 Type R, it's as raw a subaru as you can get, may not be the most powerful @330 bhp, but it's a great place to be if you want to have some fun.
I see the 22B more as an expression of that and the brand/heritage of subaru, hence it becoming a collectors item (which i'm sure was pretty much the original intention) more about appreciation as opposed to the enjoyment of giving it some, if your enough into subaru's to spend 35k on the most iconic one your hardly likely to go gravel tracking it every weekend.

How can you fly the flag for a WRX PPP when you've got a proper car like that in the garage alongside it?

I used to have bikes but sold them all when my son was born, it's the safest thing I can get a similar rush from, but it's in bits and likely to stay that way for a few years.

Wrx Wagon ppp is a fantastic all-round every day car that is very capable where it counts, the type r is for another purpose, it's a fun road rocket and track toy, i've even grown to like the looks, but it's more about what it can do and the way it makes me feel when i'm driving it.

It's a nice car, but I'm inclined to agree it's overpriced at £35k. It's a collector's car, an investment, and not going to appreciate in value from that price point for some time yet, if at all.

I love this one. There are loads out there in this condition because those that own them never drive them. The majority of them are parked up gathering dust, hence why you think there aren't many out there in this condition. Joe Bloggs wouldn't pay 35k for a Subaru.
All in your opinion of course. So those that love it are in your words ''real Subaru enthusiasts'' yet those that don't worship it aren't? Fantastic logic there
Mantazini, you and I are on the same page mate

The flared arch impreza was the first wrc car. In 97 the regs changed which allowed for more purpose designed machines to be built. It almost felt like the old and great group B days.
The 22B was the closest you could get to a proper wrc impreza which is what most people know subaru for. Remember this car won the constructors championship in its first year.
It must of caused such a stir when it was released, with its road presence, larger engine and limited run.
It was also built to commemorate 40 year's of subaru and even its name has links to there rallying.

(Interesting that 'they' had to change the company name though).
I tend to agree that it's overpriced but as a mate who's in the car sales business said to me - how do you start to value a car like that?
There's little market movement to go by, the car is far more to a very small section of the population than to others, it's 15 years old and not a BM, Porsche, Ferrari etc. etc.

From what price point, though? I might believe that a £25k 22B will go up in time, but this one's already £35k. Someone's already bought the car - probably hoping to make a few quid from the investment - and now wants to cash in.
The question then is, of course, is there someone out there today who is prepared to pay £35k? If so, then the value has indeed gone up, and it was probably a good investment. That doesn't mean the same car will also be a good investment at that price for its new owner, though.
