Just bought some new winter tyres...

Got 16" Toyo winter's on my Forester.
Brand new set were on the car when I bought it in May - been driving all summer on those tyres and I've not been killed to death yet.
I look forward to trying them in the cold.

I thought so. I used to use them when i had my Impreza. I've not been there for around 6 years and as soon as i mentioned my name they remembered me. Kind of indicates how many tyres i had on my Scoob over the years. Anyways, i get the impression they did me a good deal based on all the cash i've put their way

Yeah join the ranks of the winter tyred VAG drivers tailgaiting people at 80 mph in terrible winter weather on the motorway...but it's ok 'cos they have winter tyres.

Not as expensive as the accident you might never have, but equally might. Mine were 44 quid a corner and mean I can transport my family in greater safety in quite extreme conditions when others have to stay home or risk getting stuck or crashing. The cost is really quite negligible, as I would be wearing out my summer tyres anyway if I left those on, so apart from the fiver for fitting they are actually free. I already had some steelies going rusty in the cellar, so the alloys come off and they go on for a couple of months a year, meaning I will probably get 5 years or more of winters out of them.

Ive used my celica gt4 for the last 10 years when the weather get snowy or icy. Ive had it in some redicilous places in the snow but have never got it stuck yet. Got to admit that its always been on all seasons tyres tho . Great car in the snow !

Just had the first snow of winter up here last night I doubt it's cold enough to lay long but it'll go all slushy and horrible at some point, I know which tyres I would prefer to have on today.

Yes there will be an element of that, but I think most people sensible enough to know to put winter tyres on will drive sensibly too! It's the macho types who reckon their supreme skills mean they don't need winter tyres I worry about!

You cannot defy the laws of physics. If it rains, I accelerate and brake at a slower rate. If it snows, then multiply my previous comment by 10.
I have only been driving for 14 years but I have only ever once felt that winter tyres would have made a difference. But then again, the snow was so heavy at that time that I was stuck in a traffic jam for 3hours, all because some BMW and Merc owners were having some, er, traction issues! I still managed to get home with some clever clutch control (thanks Dad!) and a lot of forward thinking.
And as for Wurzels comment on page 1, . No need for any non-winter tyre owners trying to discuss this with him. He has clearly stated what he thinks of us. (seriously, grow up)
I am not for one second saying that winter tyres would not improve traction, braking, cornering performance etc in bad conditions. But I am saying that people can spend all the money in the world on better tyres and still have the driving skills of a baboon. But driver tuition/coaching courses aren’t as cool as saying 'I've fitted winter tyres!'
As some other people have said, if the weather is that bad, I'll stay indoors.
I'll let the hero’s fight amongst themselves.

Just had mine fitted. Tracking needed doing AGAIN (ARRGHH BMW and your adjustable wheels!!) but the NSR toe bolt was seized and snapped off - so I now need to go to the main dealer (an hour away) tomorrow to have it fixed - I'm expecting £150++ - ARRGHHHH!!!!!
The tyres look good though and ride very nicely though.

I see the other side of that argument Chris. I can imagine a lot of winter tyre users (many 4x4 driver's too!) believing that 'they' are driving gods because of spending £500 on additional set of tyres.

This of course is the best option, but in 2010 I couldn't get out of my road for over 3 weeks , you can't stay in that long and if there is a 1 in 4 hill involved you need grip!

At home, obviously ! But if they need to be out and about I'd rather they were in a car less likely to crash. I have no control over the idiots of the world, but I don't wish to join their ranks. For almost no outlay my car and family are better equipped for the conditions.

Here in Canada they tell you anything below plus 7 and your better off with winter tyres , Would have thought that alone is good enough reason to use them in the UK in winter, Some roads around here (Kamloops BC ) there are road signs telling you to use winter tyres between Oct- April and if you have an accident that may have been caused by you not having winter tyres youre insurance would be void. They make a huge difference no matter how good a driver you think you are in snow/ice .

There really is some alarmist nonsense being spouted here!
I drive around with bald tyres. Who needs tread? If it rains I adapts my driving style accordingly, as it's all about anticipation and so the performance of my tyres' small contact patch with the road is irrelevant. If it snows I actually accelerate as braking wouldn't help anyway. Actually I'm thinking with having my brakes removed too as they are also a sign of weakness.

Admittedly I would never have bought them if I had a car which was any use what so ever in the snow but as it's useless / downright dangerous in the snow, I was left with no choice!
