Ofcourse he is quicker, you're driving a car that had just 215bhp when it was new so at best, its probably got circa 200 now. Add in the drivetrain losses and you've got no chance.
The ST has more power, more torque and is a similar weight. 215bhp really isn't alot by todays standards and unfortunately you'll get your **** handed to you by many modern cars, even dare I say it, dreaded diesels....

But, you have hope. For less than a grand you can transform your cars performance. De-cat exhaust, panel filter and a remap will see circa 280bhp with similar torque.

As we're talking 'off the line' here, let's see you name a few 'derv's' that will..

I'm sure any of these would give a WRX wagon a run off the line!
Audi A3 2.0 TDI Quattro, Golf GT TDI 4 motion, BMW 1 Series 125D, Audi A4 3.0 TDi Quattro, Fabia VRS, Leon Cupra FR, BMW 330D / 335D.

Diesels have (unfortunately) come along way my Fiancées Cupra FR with Revo is pretty damn fast at 196BHP and 297Lbs of torque, that also averages 60 MPG.....it's no slouch!

Hey OP,

Sell the Impreza.

Buy a mint Legacy GTB.

Map it.

Then go and play.

Wait till second turbo kicks in. Watch Focus ST go in reverse. Don't play with the RS though.

Do not get into any drag races as the Legacy is not the car to do it in.

This is what I have done with my Wrx blob! Lol. I Will be going head to head next Saturday on a rolling road with an 2008 ST, which also has been mapped. So we will see the outcome

Surely no diesel (except something really expensive) can beat a Wrx off the line?
All newage Wrx's are good for 5.6 seconds or higher to 60 in standard form, unless they're broken or really old /tired. Mind you i would like to try obviously on a private road of course

I see the problem here mate. It's you, the driver!

Everyone knows that nothing is quicker than a Wrx wagon with PPP

If it makes you feel any better, i was tootling to work the other morning behind a fiesta, 13 plate. Not sure what model, but looked standard. "Bearing in mind my car is 380bhp" I imagine its one of them Eco boost thingy's. Just pottering over the speed bumps, the sort which are just square humps so you can progress fairly quickly. At the last bump, this fiesta took off!! Couldn't believe it at first, I was in 6th with a bacon roll in one hand and a drink in the other!! Ha. So chucked mi drink in the holder, dropped a few gears and had it with him. Before I knew it we was in triple figures. Came to the t junction, was both going separate ways, the chap put up his thumb n drove off!!

Moral to this story, most modern cars are quite quick on the road as they're road cars. Subaru impreza is derived from a rally car, there's not much going to beat us on a rally track !!

So far the excuses are.......

1. You would of had him in the twisties
2. Take him on in the wet
3. Spend some money on mods and a remap
3. You would be quicker off the line
4. He wouldn't of beat you on a rally track

Can anyone else add anymore excuses to the list?

This thread is essentially pub talk

Both the ST and WRX are well-balanced drivers' cars. In isolation they are both quick, but the game has moved on since they both came out.

Standard vs Standard the ST is a quicker car. An Impreza riding the clutch and then dumped at high revs on the line will get off the mark quicker than a lot of cars hence the 0-60 time. Mountune vs PPP I can't compare but I've assume there was not a lot in it. In terms of outright grip the Impreza wins hands down, especially in the wet.

Someone pointed out that diesels and things will make a WRX work hard and they're right. I was once absolutely eaten alive on the Motorway by a bloody Mondeo in a Clio Cup, a car whose performance figures would have suggested that wouldn't have happened. My runaround is now a lardy R32 which is far quicker because it's got a huge lump shoe-horned into the front of it, but I wouldn't like to cross swords with a 335D in it!

However from what the OP described I think he came across a tuned ST, some of the kits available for them make them very quick in the mid range, it is quite possible to achieve Focus RS (and tuned Focus RS) outputs quite easily from them.

Throw a grand or two at a 2.0 WRX however...

5. Weather was to hot and got heat soak

Thought the OP raced his friends standard 06 ST(225bhp) and he has a bug WRX with Prodrive exhaust backbox, midsection(which was part of the PPP)

Got burnt up by an ST on my way to the SWS meet last Weds.
Stupid overtaking manoeuvre (could only see 100 yards up the road and had I put my foot down I'd have closed the gap between me and the car in front).

He got lucky - 200 yards from my house and Oil Temp not even above 50.
One mile or so down the road he'd have been mine but he turned off.

Grrrr !!!!!!

However, I suppose if he gets killed by overdoing it I won't have it on my conscience.

St's are quick no doubt, there will be good and bad cars as with wrx's, two of my mates had turbo 2000 both standard cars and a year difference between them and one would have drove over the top of the other, we raced them on a half mile straight road and there was about 6 car lengths difference, as for the diesel comment, the only car on that list worth mentioning is the 335 or 535 the others im afraid are to lame, a mk4 1.9tdi pd130 remapped to around 190bhp is about as quick as a diesel can be off the mark and unfortunately could not get off the line as my 03 wrx in standard form when nailing a 7000rpm launch

Why anyone would 'race' in a standard wrx is beyond me , you bought the car for the handling surely not the power (or lack of)..modern cars have much more power and capabilities these days, gotta remember bugeyes are over 11 years old now

Who cares whats quicker off the line, its the most ridiculous performance fact going. 0-60 times mean **** all.
Real world driving is what matters and yes, many modern diesels would eat a standard wrx. You're talking about a car that has roughly 200bhp with similar torque and weighs the best part of a ton and a half. Hardly a performance car is it !

Course they would, but who on earth drives a 'standard' WRX though?
A boggo WRX isn't a performance car by anyone's standards.

However, about £1k worth of mods and only the £30k+ top of the range BMW's, Audi's etc. will be a problem.

Most important figure is the 30-70 time through gears. Gives a far better indication of how quick something is if you just boot it.

The quarter mile time is also a good one, anything below 13 seconds is seriously moving!

Manufacturer figures are either simulated or involve driving the car with little mechanical sympathy on a favourable surface. Some of those diesels with the slower 0-60 times are as quick as a wrx in that range (30-70). Those VAG 2.0 diesels with DSG are amazing for overtaking at speed.

What if the diesel has £1k thrown at it as well?
To many excuses going on here, look on a track yes a Impreza would win hands down, everyday road use then these modern diesels are quick and have a big load of torque and a lot now rev a lot higher then old school diesels that died at £5k.
You can't really compare any car your racing as you never know what's been done to it. And saying put a grand into a WRX will make it win what if the Focus ST also had a grand thrown at it.

The end of the day someone will always have a quicker car then you and it could be in a car that you least expect to be quick!
