I see where you are coming from, and I agree to a point, but it was just the done thing and it seemed to suit. It wasn't company policy, so I assume it was probably just something that was arranged between the staff and management at some point and nobody had a problem with it. I don't have kids either but I was happy for it to be arranged that way as I would rather (at the time) not be working on NYE. Due to operational changes, it doesn't really apply now as the latest anyone works on either is about 5/6 pm.

My OH works shifts, the way it works there (all year round, not just Christmas) is that you arrange your own shift cover if you want time off. If someone signs to work your shifts and then for what ever reason can't do it it's up to them to get a third person to cover. Every day is paid the same so no double or triple time for working bank holidays/ Christmas. So with all that in mind if you are down to work Christmas and can get someone else to cover then good for you.
No one is 'given' shifts, it's a rolling pattern that's been the same for fifteen years or so, and is a 24/7 industry so no one would go in to that line of work if they wanted every Christmas off.

im an engineer on hydrostats and one of our customers wants a big job doing over the Christmas shutdown so they have agreed to pay us an extra £100 an hour over Christmas eve Christmas day and boxing day, so that's £3600+normal wages for 3 shifts and on top of that im working nights so I will be at home when the kids open their presents. happy days and roll on buying goodies for the car
