stick to the 2 liter engine models, as so many guys up here have said. they didn't even break here in SA, then you must know how though they were!

 

I would strongly recommend trying to buy one from a true enthusiast which is where I got mine from and don't regret it one bit! Not sure if anyone has explained that the blobeye is the newage later version than the bugeye, big difference in the lights and look

 

Offer 8,500 for the blue one, try your luck. Don't ask and you don't get. It's a very tidy looking car that but low mileage and I suspect the seller isn't in a hurry to get rid of it.

As I said before those JDMs command a premium. However I'll stick by what I said, if you're going to part with that amount of extra cash you'll need to make sure the twin scroll is worth it for you.

As you've already gathered, ignore negative posts like this:

You've obviously done a bit of homework and know what your money could get you, and a few members have been helpful in that respect.

I notice that you said this will be your first Scooby, so can I ask what are you expecting out of it?

Winter coming, all-weather performance - you don't need a Blob STi.
Blistering performance compared to what you have been driving - you don't necessarily need a Blob STi.
You've got £8k and you want the best that can buy - then, yes - consider a (late) Blob STi.

But you always have the option of an earlier one (or a 'lesser' one such as a WRX) for less and can spend the rest on an upgrade.

Tbh, if you've owned/driven 'standard' cars then you could save yourself a few £££(£) and still have the thrill and confidence of owning a far superior Subaru.

Anyway, I think it's been mentioned, that when you see something you fancy put a link up and many on here will give their opinion and advice.

thanks for your well respected advice. yes its my first scoob, i currently drive a volvo s60 2.4 d5 se. not a powerhouse i know but i went for reliability for work. i travel 50m round trip dominantly on motorway. i got a bike for a power toy, but now after realizing that i work hard dont have kids or mortgage then why shouldnt i have a nice car. i was originally looking to get a bmw 2.5d sport but wanting a scoob has always been a dream. obviously never been in a position to obtain one until now and thought why not. been havin a word with myself telling myself i dont want to look back on my life and regret not having a stab at it.. all the same i appreciate you advice. i want reliability and nice power without ridiculous mods.. mods just make things complicated..

Then I'd say go for it, and as someone's said, look at the forum's 'for sale' because one bought from an enthusiast is most probably well cared for. (Think we had a thread on this in the last few days).

Personally I'm not fussed with adverts that say things like a 320 bhp upgrade and then quote technical specs for a standard one ie. 262bhp.#
I also don't like ads that state "not your usual rubbish".

Ask if there's proof of the remap (dyno etc), invoices from Scoobyworld and then I'd consider viewing.

No offence, but remember that given you're new to Subarus then even a dog of one will in your eyes be brilliant.

and yes im being vigilant. a lot of adverts are stating sti and they clearly arnt..
the less mods the better

 

My view of this is:

* All the extras are basically cosmetic, not mods;
* "..will never leave you stuck in the snow" - so the forthcoming Winter is being used as a selling point then?
* it's in Aberdeen, so you'd be very serious on buying it if you went up to view, which is to the seller's advantage.

In fairness, I think members more up on scoobies than me need to give their views on this one, and perhaps advice if you were to contact the seller.

There was no Solberg special editon in the UK - it was Germany, Italy, Finland and Aus/NZ only I think and only the Germany and Aus/NZ one was 2004. So the answer is no. The WR1 editoon in 2004 was the car the other countries used for the Solberg edition, but that was a light ice blue colour so this isn't one of them either.

That said the speical editions are not always worth the premium they command anyway.

Seeing as you are completley new to the marque I honestly think the first thing you need to do is dirive an STI and a WRX in the price bracket you can afford to see which one best suits your needs. They are quite different cars and although many will tell you the STI is the one to have if you are not into big power and mods and want reliability and 'reasonable' running costs then a well sorted WRX may be ample for what you want!

Then when you have decided roughtly what you want people on here can tell you which version and model you should look at. Many of us have been on here more or less since the forum opened in 1998 and some of us can even remember when the Impreza first landed in the UK in 1993/1994 (I bought my first one in 1996) so know quite a bit about the entire timeline of the Impreza and the multitude of different versions available!

 

That car in the link is a bit of a strange one to me. I didn't think the widetrack arrived until 2005, but I may be wrong. Also the black seats??? They were only on various STI special editions, the Type UK's had blue seats. DCCD didn't arrive until 2005, but that maybe a 2005 model registered in late 2004. That may also account for the widetrack. You need to ask the owner for a bit more info in my opinion.

A limited edition of 1000 Japanese MY04 WRX STI's with DCCD were exported to celebrate victory in the 2003 WRC drivers' championship. 500 were sold in Europe, Australia and South Africa as the Petter Solberg edition; the other 500 were further modified by Prodrive and sold in the UK as the WR1. They had 320 bhp (239 kW) and 309.8 ft·lbf (420.0 N·m), a 0–60 mph time of 4.25 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph (249 km/h) (electronically limited). They were equipped with Prodrive WRX STI springs, Pirelli PZero Nero tires, mesh grilles, special Ice Blue metallic paint and Prodrive PFF7 Pewter wheels. The new ECU and exhaust were not EU-homologated, so they were fitted after registering the car.

Just edited my post above as you posted. We had the WR1 in the UK, but it is a much lighter/ice blue colour not the darker more traditional blue of the car in the link.

Yes I believe they were as I saw one in Perth, Aus in 2008 and that was WR blue (the usual blue you see these cars in). However I am pretty sure that none of them made it to the UK as the European ones would have been LHD. We got the 500 WR1 ice blue cars which made no mention of Solberg!

My guess is that the car in the link is a model year 2005 STI Type UK that someone has changed the blue seats for black ones from a Spec C or the likes!
