I got a WRX for my first scooby as I knew it was going to be a daily driver, there great cars and it's a lot cheaper to run and insure than an STI would have been, they are plenty fast enough for public roads. IMO they only look an inferior car when parked next to a STI, so as long as I don't do that I don't get the envy.

The WRX is not a slow car. Only an idiot would suggest this. I've had a classic UK Turbo and 2 classic STI's. Im now in an 05 WRX. All had stage one mods, some with a remap and some without. They were/are all fast cars. Plus a lot of people forget how quickly the small TD04 turbo spools up.

The most important factor to consider is what 'you' want. I personally, like you, wanted a mint Impreza and I had £5k to spend. I enjoy cleaning my cars as much as I do driving them, so a scruffy bug sti just wouldn't have appealed to me. Some owners on here clearly don't give a monkey about aesthetics.
I wanted to be the first with 310 on a TD04 but due to a tired engine I just opted for a TD05 to make power, the spool difference is remarkable. 2500 compared to 4500 now.

I'd love to know the 0-60 of a WRX running 300bhp on a TD04, I bet it's substantial. I think Busta might have done it I'm not so sure.

I picked up STI sideskirts and bonnet vent up for next to nowt on ebay, doddle for the wife to fit. STI spoiler is usually all ready on WRX's for sale.

Spats are a bitch to find though.

Looks can be overcome, the big question for me is do you want 350bhp or 450bhp before big money comes into it???

For me the Blobeye is the definitive Subaru incarnation.. Sure traditionalists like an Escort MK2 but the Blob is the Escort Cosworth.

I'd love to, I think someone said I'd have to pay at a public weighbridge but it'd be free at a tip?

I'd hope for 1240 which is 150 down from the standard 1390, but I think 120 is more realistic.

The seats, spare, bumper bar, underbrace, and AC knock around 80 off, the rest knocks it off slower at 1g to 5kg.

I think the rotas are 2kg lighter than standard and the nuts combined 1kg. I'll deffo have to weight it.

+1

(Only problem is, they'll then come on here and ask "Is this the best I can get for my money?")

Its surprising how little weight you save by removing/replacing stuff to be honest.
I really went to town on my classic, was pretty much bare and the best I could get down to was 1160kg. I didn't replace the standard seats though for lightweight ones like you.

I'm glad I had the wrx before I got the STi - it meant I had a step up in performance from one car to the next. If I'd have gone straight for the STI then what do you "upgrade" to after that?
A T25 Blob I suppose

Then after all that hard work you find humidity's at 90% and your 0-100 time climbs by 0.267sec.

All joking apart, do you have a scrapyard near you?
There's one about 9 miles from us that uses a weighbridge.

Shouldn't cost a lot, nothing if you drive in with some scrap.
