Yes with cap off it will push the coolant out, however with the cap on the pressure should not exceed the cap & leak past.
Try a cap 1st however sounds like system is pressurising.
We offer a headgasket replacement drive in drive out price which is lower than £1200.00 however we strongly recommend to pay the extra to have a full rebuild to inspect the complete engine & replacing the rings & bearings, refacing the decks & the engine has a full new lease of life.
All the best getting ontop of it.

Just an update for anyone interested.
I got hold of a block tester in the end.
Done the test numerous times and fluid stayed blue.
I did notice after shut off that there was a slight hissing sound coming from the header tank cap. Looks like the cap is faulty so I would assume this would cause pressure problems in the system?
Not sure if anyone can confirm this for me. There shouldn't be any air coming out of the cap surely?
Also just wanted to some comments on the following:
Is it normal that if you run the car without the radiator cap on it will over flow out?
Same with the header tank cap if you rev it up?
I think because my cap is leaking I'm getting air in the system every time I drive it.

The cap is designed to keep the water in, so it stands to reason it'll leak out if you leave it off..
My personal feeling is that inevitably "head gasket failure" will result in water being forced out under pressure and subsequent overheating due to low coolant levels. If you aren't getting any of that, you don't have head gasket failure. In any event, it's pretty rare on a new age 2.0 STi. They have multi layer metal gaskets, and don't suffer from loose bolts like the 2.5's.
I don't trust "sniff" tests, they are far too easy to "misinterpret" for my liking. If you truly have head gasket problems, the car will let you know about it!
This is what I suggest;
From COLD remove the header tank cap and check the level. It should be pretty much full. If it isn't, fill it. Replace the cap. Then check the plastic expansion bottle level. Quite a way down the exterior, you'll find a line. It doesn't need any more in it, as it's designed to catch the water that is normally expelled due to expansion. If all is ok, just drive it around as normal. The next day, assuming you've done over 20 miles or so, check it all again. I have a sneaky feeling all will be well.
