Exactly - the "last" used to mould the boot will vary between manufacturers. Visit a good outdoor shop and try on a few pairs to find what is best. I wouldn't buy on-line as you may want to try on a couple of sizes in each boot (especially if there are half sizes). It's fine getting some snazzy Gucci go-faster boots but they are pointless if they cripple you.

Also, I was always told to buy boots in the afternoon as your feet swell up during the day.

Recently bought my first pair of gortex boots, previously had leather & newbuck
first pair Scarpa lasted about 10yrs regular use sometimes up to 3 times a week doing 6/8miles, second pair LA Sportiva have done pretty much the same and still in good condition outside just the inner is worn.

New Regatta alpha pro vxt gortex, very comfortable and light, ripped in less than a year didn't leak but they do now.

Needless to say I'll be back in leather boots soon.

i had a pair of Salomon they lasted 6 months they split accross the sole luckily not when up a mountain since then i have stuck to Meindel Burma Pro for hills and Scarpa ZG65 for low level walking

i have heard the quality of Salomon is very hit or miss so would avoid

You need a season 3/4 or just a season 4 boot, one of the best I found were Alt Berg's, British made and having tried a few pairs before buying, pretty much the most comfy of the lot.

You want something like this, done me well over the last few years no matter what the conditions

Not exactly walking boots but I have been a Lowa fan for a number of years, currently on my second pair of Lowa Desert Elites and still have my first pair of Lowa Patrols. Comfy as anything with great support. May be worth a look

Lowa are a bloody good boot, but as I said before, all depends on what you're planning on doing too, if you intend on doing any technical scrambles / easy climbs then any ankle boot will hinder your range of movement.

I have North Face ankle boots for normal walking/hiking, Merrell goretex shoes for hiking/scrambles/easy climbs and Five Tens for bouldering/climbing.

I'm not looking to go climbing Everest or anything (although that would be one hell of an experience ), well, not really looking to climb much at all really. lol.

I'm just looking for something that will keep my feet dry/warm, will be comfortable and last. If the local woods etc are wet/muddy I only have trainers to put on which ain't so good, plus the times when we do have snow - I again only have trainers.

Quite a few of the "mesh" style boots have suede type material which I don't think would last too long once wet/dirty so that's why i'm now thinking of going for a leather style boot - albeit possibly a little overkill for my basic needs but at least I would hopefully have a good pair of boots on my feet??

Altberg for me! Just got mine back after being re-soled at their factory. Hopefully they'll last another 4 years!!!

For general walking you can use pretty much any boot you like, just choose a style shoe/boot and then either leather/fabric.

For walking I'd go for a boot for extra ankle protection and for what you've described as usage I'd probably choose a Brasher Hillmaster II GTX

Walking/hiking boots are graded for the conditions they are good for, if you walk in winter conditions then a season 1 or 2 boot really isnt suitable, a season 3 boot can be ok, a season 3-4 boot is advisable as minimum (plus you can fit clampons for snow/ice) and for total overkill a season 4 boot but really a 3-4 is what you need, good waterproof and always leather afaik because the fabrics cant handle it (temps etc).
