Think we've forgotten an important factor here, cars have crumple zones. The reason why 2 cars colliding at 60mph doesn't give the same level of damage as 1 going into a solid/immobile object at 120mph is because a significant portion of the energy is dissipated in the crumble zones of the 2 vehicles.

"Some rushed out of their homes carrying fire extinguishers but they were unable to save the people inside"
the driver made a poor decision and RIP but have some sympathy for the people who have to deal with the aftermath also

There is a 30mph speedlimit on that road, it's a bus route and a residential area with shops and junctions, so speed estimates are highly speculative.
The Warburton lorry is an 18tonne rigid body HGV, 18 tonne being the max gross weight it can be, fully loaded. 7-8 Tonne would be it's unladen weight and a good proportion of that would be at the front, engine/ gearbox, just about where the scooby hit.
It's so sad when 3 young chaps die this way.

Young, inexperienced lads in fast cars who think they can drive often ends in upset. It happens an awful lot unfortunately.
Just a few years ago a young lad rolled his evo 3 just down the road from my house. Had three young girls in the back who he was trying to impress. Went into a corner at high speed and ran out of talent very quickly.
I had very quick cars from the start of my driving days, at 18 with 300bhp I could quite easily of had a terrible accident if I'd got caught up in the antics that many of my friends did.

There's lots of speculation but:
- Fact - three lads are dead.
- Fact - at least one of them was part of the Subaru-loving community.

Sad news this morning and a wake up call for all of us but mostly me, as I live down the road. I have driven around there rather 'sprightly' at times but last night's weather was so poor, I wouldn't dream of it. Sunday night is generally race night and there are meets in the area. As I was driving home, I heard a couple of cars making a racket but I thought they must be mad in that rain. Had a few calls today checking if was still alive! RIP.

Unfortunately these cars are so cheap now these things are going to increase, i remember when i was 18 the fastest thing we could get for that price was a ancient gti or xr3i withh about 120hp
Worst time of the year for all involved

My best mate was the passenger. Can't believe it.
Subaru was not speeding at all. Astra jerked him off the road and made him Air Bourne. No one inexperienced. They were in there 30's. Been driving subarus for years.
I lost a very good mate. Very close brother.

unfortunately after reading the report about this terrible crash in one of todays papers it looks like firstly there were 3 cars involved as they mentioned the impreza with an astra and a vw and the guy driving the vw I think it was said the impreza overtook him as he was racing the astra and the impreza was doing at least 90mph.....how true some of this is we may never know but I am pretty sure that the newspapers wouldn't print eye witness statements just for fun and they would be verified etc.
but it does look like the impreza was racing the astra now if you class that as showing off so be it but it was also in a 30mph zone...
as I said in my earlier message yesterday Chinese whispers make things sound worse than they are or add bits and pieces to tragedies and unless you are actually there seeing what was happening we may never know....

where did this information come from then "the Subaru was not speeding "

i know but the story is quite laughable, as said above nobody knows the facts as none have been released.
looking at the car id think it would take a while to determine if it had nitro in it or not and wtf a mention of paul walker has got to do with it either.
also the car involved was a wagon but hey lets put a wr blue sti in the pic for dramatic effect
all it needed was a paragraph about how he lost control while shifting into 27th gear living his life a quarter of a mile at a time and the story would have been perfect.
i wonder if this story would have even made the papers if mr walker had not been recently killed or if the car was a fiesta instead.
