Not many things set me off but I was devastated when I heard that Natasha Richardson had died. This would be a similar tragedy, he's 45 with a wife and young family FFS.

It's a stark reminder of how we're all here but for the grace of the good lord.

Schumacher was an incredible talent and probably the greatest racing driver of all time. But I hope we do not remember him for being as fragile as the rest of us, killed by bashing his head on a bloody rock.

Sky News reporting he arrived at the hospital in a coma and a neurosurgeon operated on him immediately.

Can only assume the spokesperson who earlier announced that it wasn't serious couldn't reveal the truth until certain people were informed first. How I hate rolling 24hr news in these situations.

Wishing him a quick and full recovery!

I've been trying to find as much information as I can in the last few minutes. I caught the headline this afternoon but it appeared that he was okay, that was obviously not the case.

I think the reports about being in a coma on arrival refer to his state after transfer from the first hospital. He had already been receiving treatment at that point.

There are brain haemorrhages and brain haemorrhages if you know what I mean. Let's hope that quick and speedy recovery is well under way.

Gary Hartstein (or Sid Watkins' replacement as you may know him), has been tweeting away. I'm confident he knows a fair bit more than all of us who have no medical training.

He's one of the best F1 drivers ive ever seen, watching him race in the wet was something else.

Touch wood and fingers crossed he makes a full recovery, obviously the next 24hrs are crucial.

I'm sure his family will be making their way to the hospital. It is expected that Ralph will be last as usual!!!!

As the Doc says, the news we all want to hear is that he is starting to come off the respirator, and that intercranial pressure is normalised.

It doesn't sound like an induced coma from reading a cross section of he media reports.

I suspect and hope it was induced before transfer from the first hospital.

Hopefully a full recovery will be made

Reading through the various bits and bobs available everything is under control from his medical team, hopefully leaving him with no after affects.

If I came out of a coma and the first thing I saw was Jean Todt it would certainly liven up the senses.

Fingers and toes crossed for the old boy. He was and still is my childhood hero. I blubbed when he retired in 2006 for god sake. Must be tough for his wife and kids. Sending more thoughts their way.

I know, really doesn't sound good. Head injuries are difficult to treat as we know so little about the human brain in the grand scheme of things. I just hope he can return to some sort of normality, for his families sake.

Hang in there Schumi.

Latest from live press conference with doctors at the hospital.
Quote from Professor Payen from the hospital: "We can say he is fighting for his life. We judge him to be in a very serious situation."

The second operation story is not true, just the press once again stirring it and prepping the obituary VT... *****!

He is being kept in a coma to reduce the chance of secondary brain damage and to give the brain time to stablilise, we won't know the extent of any injuries for a few days yet I guess!

As I've had experience with head injuries, nobody will know the extent of injuries for a good few weeks, may be even months. Cerebral damage is very difficult to deal with both for the patient and his family.

As with Michael, my Dad was awake and talking for a few hours after the his head injury. (fell 9ft head first onto a concrete floor.)

It was only when some **** at the hospital sat him up that everything went wrong. The first aiders at the building merchants had kept him on his back as advised in their training.

Schumacher is surrounded by the best of the best in the medical world and he is still very fit.
Fingers and toes crossed that Michael pulls through.

Quick. Play him a tape of Boy George.

Seriously, this is awful news. As said above though, if anyone is best equipped to make a recovery, it's the incredibly fit Schumi.
Fingers crossed.

That was my biggest fear, as I said earlier there are brain injuries and brain injuries. A subdural haematoma was what I thought and hoped it may have been, but going back for seconds suggests something intracranial.

If he survives he could remain in a bad way. It is horrible.

I never supported him as a driver as I was usually cheering for a Mclaren or Williams but I always liked him, totally respected him for his brilliance and I was genuinely made up for him when he won that first title with Ferrari. He was simply awesome that season and had to be to stop Hakkinen. But despite what our press tried to make him out to be I was never in any doubt that he was a top guy off the track and an absolute legend on it.

He underwent a second operation last night to evacuate a second haematoma on the left side of the brain and further reduce the swelling of the brain as surprisngly (the doctor's words) he was in a condition where this could be done safely late afternoon/early evening!

The doctors sound a little more positive today! They are saying there is a definite improvement on yesterday, but they cannot say he is out of danger yet! Still taking it hour to hour!

Fingers crossed!
