A lot of the "difficulty" in walking or climbing at night is a persons perception of being in darkness, once you get out there, it's really not that bad. Takes more effort to complete, but it's the same Mountain at night as the in the day
The BEST thing about night hikes/climbs is no hoards if tourists, that's why on summer days I tend to stick to less iconic places like Moel Siabod, Pen yr Ole Wen, Tryfan etc... Snowdon attracts the flip flop hikers and train tourists.

Completely agree, total peace, even in -15 and 90mph winds, it's relaxing.

Relaxing? bad enough in daylight when you can see the exposed ridges.

I like an early start to avoid the crowds but not that early...must admit there is something extremely satisfying knowing you are finishing your walk when others are just starting their's.

The fog came down, but not badly enough for us to lose direction, we strayed from the path a couple of times, but nothing too bad.

The top was frozen snow, icy winds and thick fog, literally couldn't see where we were going. Stopped in the shelter of the building, but it was too cold to stay long. Took a lot longer to get up there too than I expected with the wind and the guys new to climbing/walking.

Bit slippy on the way back down, rain hit us hard, but water proofs stood their ground, the wind and rain made it impossible to take any layers of, so the smell of 4 blokes back in the car was a bit iffy
All in all, it was a great walk, I will be going it again and I would certainly recommend a night work to anyone interested. Crib is my next night one, but the 70mph winds make it a no go this time of year.
Top job! Glad to know you enjoyed the challenge, and got back home safe.

I regularly do snowdon for sunrise then Dh bike it down the llanberis trail. Got a youtube vid somewhere.

At the summit in perfect conditions watching the sunrise is amezzin.

Then the 12minutes back down again are rockin. :-)

Will do the MB at some point, it's getting there that early that's a ball ache, did Moel Fam down hill in darkness, have to say, the speed in the dark is scary.

Pint of tea for me please.

Is the shelter on the top of Cadair Idris still standing? Walked up there a good few years ago, kipped the night in the shelter and down again after breaky.

Did the 'Three Peaks challenge' on mountain bikes a few years ago; carry them up, thrash them down without coming off. The worst was Scafell, but worse still was the van trip between mountains, a high speed journey while we crashed about in the back thinking we were doomed. Don't think you can ride the paths now except on the race days, wouldn't want to do it again.

Cadair Idris has been one of my fave ascents up in Wales. So many people miss out by not going for a good walk!

And the ones who can only manage small challenge, please come along to Moel Famau mountain in Flintshire, North Wales. It's one of those walks you can do in an afternoon. The mission is to get to the peak. For me, the reward at the peak is so disappointing that I think why the hell I bothered doing all that huffing and puffing. Doing all that walking for a bit of a fortress ruin covered in sheep poo is annoying. You can't even have a picnic there. Still good, as so many people proudly hang on to the ruin's bits with one foot low on a lose rock and one knee high, and get their pictures done. You can also see Liverpool from there.

I cycled up Cadair Idris once. Pretty much had to carry my bike down the other side!

Fair play on cycling up. We got up to the summit in around 1hr45mins with the Spaniel leading the way and easily that again (maybe longer) descending. It was quite hard on the feet on the way down in fairness. Would definitely go again. Loved it.

My dad used to go up that Moel every week, he stayed at Colomendy for a few years when Liverpool was one big bomb site. So last year thought I ought to go up Moel Famau for myself, nearly got blown off at the top it was a proper wind tunnel in that tower.
I might take him back this year so he can see how it looks now (but Cheshire Oaks more appealing to me if I'm honest )

Nice one. Lydia! If you ever come this way to climb Moel Famau, do feel free to drop me a pm. I'll come huffing and puffing with you! I'm a local to Moel Famau. I also go shopping to Cheshire Oaks sometimes. There, if you ever see a 40-something Indian woman looking like 60 with eccentric hair style, just shout- " Hiya Swati!". I'll definitely respond and we'll go for coffee together.

I might just do that, thanks
We've been over a few times the last couple of years, have relatives in Chester and Ellesmere Port so we've dropped in to see them and then gone on to N Wales. There's usually a good deal on at Ruthin Castle so we stay there, lovely place but noisy bleddy peacocks everywhere.

Ruthin is 20 minute drive from me, and it will be great to meet you, Lydia.

Ruthin Castle is beautiful, but I wouldn't stay in top floor high ceiling bedrooms. Not just the peacocks, but bleddy howling winds keep you awake all night! It's like deceased Welsh royals' spirits are haunting the place; telling you in their windy language to get the f**k out of their pad! Quite spooky. Good place to stay, but I'm not keen on their mass-produced expensive meals. I had my major Christmas works do there this year. Meal was rank, I could have cooked better than that. Their medieval banquet is quite an experience, though. But you have to sit near complete strangers on wooden benches to eat caveman style food, drink mead and listen to some Welsh beauties harping on- literally. I 'd go in a gown for something like that.

I'm on for Scoobynet banquet , but I'll stay down while you and other scoobynetters go up the mountain with Pimmo for a self-torture adventure, if you don't mind.

I do like the idea, Lydia.

We do MF about twice a week, at night, if you follow the path to the right, it's about a 7 mile loop, coming down on our bikes is awesome too.

To be honest running MF is how we train for the bigger hikes.

Oh, right. You must live around MF as well, then. I thought you lived on an island somewhere near France, you see.

We know some people who used to do (perhaps they still do) the annual Moel Famau running competition. I think I should walk up MF in Summer. I can manage FM, but I'm not climbing Snowdon, no way.

Oh, wow, as close as Wallasey? You might as well be Welsh, then. I go that way all the time. In fact, I was driving that way past midnight/early morning today, but then I had to turn to M56; to get to John Lennon airport. Had I known, I would have dropped in for a cuppa on my way back.

Honestly Pimmo, I should be climbing all these lovely Welsh mountains to get my fitness back. I think a Scoobynetters climbing trip should be organised, it'll be dead cool. People can bring their cats and dogs with them. My cats are up for it.

I'm 15 minutes from Moel Siabod, Snowdon, Tryfan

My preference is Tryfan & The Glyders though, Snowdon may be the highest, but it's not the best.
