it seems realistically these engines are like any other cars, and not like what people say....oh engine rebuild needed after a certain time or the blocks very weak.
i did have a bugeye 3/4 years ago but after a week i notice the gears were quite notchy, took it to a friend and had to have a gearbox rebuild due to the synco. I guess it was just bad look!

Still original clutch I believe (won't slip, not out of trying )

120K (-ish) on my 95 WRX before hg blew.
Uncertain about SH but I had it for nearly two years/20k+ miles before 'the event'.
Only major issue was a seized caliper somehow.

Uses coolant (topped up perhaps 2 litres/week but of course depends upon usage).
Real tell-tale signs - coolant on the road under the overflow when parked up (brownish colour, and clearly under where the car is parked) and the BIG one - start it up with the expansion tank cover off and as it warms/heats up you get bubbling up through the coolant in the tank.
I thought it was an airlock but took it to a mate who had prepared Subarus for a garage that tracked one.
I've no idea of the cost.
A local chav offered me £500. I warned him that it looked like the hg had gone but all he was concerned about was that the turbo was fcuked.
He gave it a whirl and paid up.
It will probably be obvious that I didn't know a lot about the mechanics of subarus at the time.
Anyway, it's one of the reasons that you need to test drive/view a Subaru when it's warm.
What happens apparently is that the heads expand with the heat and the hg (initially) can't maintain the seal, hence air makes its way into
the coolant. As the engine cools the seal is restored, hence engine temp comes down.
Eventually bang goes the hg (Very rough explanation but hopefully enough to comprehend).

And people slate the Wrx so much it is unreal. The sti's are great cars don't get me wrong, but I love my Wrx. 270bhp on public roads is more than enough for my everyday drive.

Firing rings can go with age but usually blow because of excessive blow by from cylinders or running lean. Water jackets can corrode if incorrect coolant is used.

Ps, mine is not the clutch but the thrust bearing or spigot bearing, but i'll change clutch while i'm at it, 101,000 and clutch doesn't slip.
Engines are pretty reliable as long as you change the oil regularly/ make sure it's topped up and use the correct fuel.
I suspect wrong fuel was used on my type r before I got it hence the first rebuild, I think it was on it's way out when I bought it as it only lasted a week but I wanted that one so bad I let my heart rule my head, big mistake.
