There was a good feature on Pistonheads earlier this month on how modern FWD hot hatches have caught up and passed the 4WD rally reps.

So lessons learned the hard way i'll just sit back and enjoy what I have for now and just let the newer pocket rockets blast past.

Saying that though - kept a TT quatro honest going up a long 10% incline. Was well impressed, although not sure if he was giving if full beans, I know I was, and in the sweet spot in 3rd gear - it still sings, nothing like that SSSSHHHHWWWEEE from T'bo and the growl from the exhaust on a Monday morning.

Still FWD and I don't care what magazine reviews say - as they don't live on my planet, as everytime I've driver a high performance FWD car in the damp or wet (i.e most days) I am left yearning for my AWD again...that including a brief test drive of a Scirroco R, where I actually turned the car round after it squirmed about for traction under power, with the light constantly blinking. I told the dealer it was a waste of time going any further as it wasn't the car for me.
I'd rather have a slower car with traction that can put all of its power down when requested rather than a car that has to use all of its traction control wizardry to hold back the engine power when its needed the most, for example when booting it out of a busy junction in the wet.

If its a Scirroco R...up the bhp by another 50 as they have 260bhp, can be quite stealthy if specced right...unlike the chavvy Scirroco GTS which looks like a dogs dinner.

Moments like that make you realise you need more power, like 400bhp ish running open downpipe, or as I like to call it, the shock and awe of the road if you will... Then you meet a huge blown v8 on a 2mile straightaway and its back to square 1 again. Is there such thing as a flat 4 land speed record?

Probably why Ive had 3 Evo's and 7 Impreza's in 13 years of driving as I love traction of AWD!!!

I had a 2009 Leon Cupra K1 with the 2.0TSI engine.
After a remap the mid range was amazing.
There's a Scottish guy on Youtube doing runs at Crail running stage 2 in his K1 and eating Focus RSs and Imprezas for dinner. (Standard Imprezas I may add)
But..... Boring.
Golf GTI is boring.
Had 2 Golf R32s (MK4), lovely cars but boring in the end.
Always come back to Impreza.
They maybe dated, but every conversation I hear lately about people beating STI Imprezas, they always come from guys who have newer hot hatches and have them remapped to high heaven against standard Scoobs.
Still think my Blob STi is as good as any hot hatch today but that's my opinion.
If a new fancy dash with lots of lights and gadgets is what you want then go for it, but I like to have fun in all weathers so I'll take my STi thanks.
Not that I'm biased.

^^ totally agree. I had a 3.2 A3, it was a lovely drive and nippy enough. But it wasn't fast, and wasn't great on the bends. My impreza in comparison feels like an absolute monster. Pulls like a train on boost, and handles like a dream. I can't wait to get it how I want it, I'm sure it'll be faster than 90% of standard hot hatches.

the interior, build quality, mpg, running costs and worse of all image out way the one plus point.
do people really street race everywhere, ive never had such a thing happen to me in all my impreza driving years, is it just something newbs claim to make them think their wrx is a road going f1 car??
#54
I've never raced the impreza tbh. For me the seats are more comfy than the Audi sline seats, the mpg is actually better in the impreza till I boot it, running costs are less so far, and even though the Audi was a nicer interior on the whole with good build quality, it just couldn't put a smile on my face like the impreza.

I had a 2013 bmw 530D for the week on hire while my car was in the bodyshop, was pleasantly surprised at how quick it was, for only having a few bhp more than my wrx it seemed much much quicker, got to certain speeds in excess of 130mph (on a private road obviously) much quicker than the wrx ever would...if it would. I also had a nice blast on a back road with a clio a couple of months back, i could not for the life of me pull away, cars nowadays are making these old dogs look sluggish ........still, i'd love to see my bmw or clio get to work in a few inches of snow

I have a tsi scirocco and it is quick but you just get 'wheel hop' if you put ur foot down in the damp and with tc off just spins, once you do get the power down though it pulls well through the range, and is bloody lovely car to drive and comfy as he'll!
Will be getting another hopfuly the 'r' next year!

Dont take it to heart. It was probably a diesel too and still giving double the mpg to your impreza.
It make me laugh how people think imprezas are really fast super cars.
Fact is they are old mildly quick family cars.
A modern diesel will trounce most pmsl
