fitting Autometer Senders
#1
I've just got some Autometer Oil Temp and Pressure gauges and was wondering where would be the best place to fit the senders??
The senders both have a 1/8 npt thread and come with various adapters.
For the temp one would it be better to have an adapter brazed into the sump or would I need a special sump bung?
and for the pressure do i replace the old sender or can i use the port above no3 piston??
Any help apprciated
Cheers

None of the connecty things that the Autometer stuff comes with fit! Very helpful...
ScoobyMania, & doubtless other places, can supply adaptors that do fit. Look at Chiark's site for lots of info in general.
The oil pressure attachments can replace the standard one (just behind/below the alternator) and adaptors can be supplied for temperature that go either as the sump plug or under the intercooler next to cylinder 3 (a good place!).

Mark,
i've fitted the defi gauges to my MY94 WRX so can show you what I've done. I tapped the sump plug for the oil temperature sensor but to be honest if I was doing it again would take off the sump and braze a fitting in the side.( This is because of the thermocouple being vulnerable to damage ; if knocked off no oil, not good ! )Beware of heat distorting the sump pan though ! ,I've a spare 1/8 NPT 'T' piece for the oil pressure sender if it helps.
Regards,
John

Ian ,
The sump pan position I chose was purely for ease of fitting and may not i know be the best position for recording the maximum oil temperatures as the sump pan is in the airflow and probably acts as a radiator to some degree.I beleive a popular position for the oil temp thermocouple position is by removing the plug on the oil gallery (above no 3 cylinder I think ... ) and would have used this but was unable to find said plug on my MY94 WRX .
Can anyone confirm it exists on early cars ? Whether this position is better for recording max. oil temps is not clear either due to the dough-nut oil cooler on the oil filter cooling the oil before sending it round the engine via the oil rifle.Whereas the oil in the sump has just been exposed to the bottom of the pistons and also the drain line from the (admittedly water cooled ) turbo . So the oil in the sump may be hotter ......or colder ????????
I don't know the answer but it would be good to find out . Anyone got any experience of oil temperatures at different points around the engine ?
Regards,
John

Yes the oil gallery plug does exist on my 95WRX car, I've just moved my Autometer temp sensor from the Sump to the No 3 Oil gallery to get some more consitent readings (It is a sod to get to by the way and requires an allen key to remove it, Chiark's site mentions the part no to convert to the autometer temp sender thread).
Temps in sump were between 50-60 C depending on weather.
Above no 3 I'm getting between 87-93 C which is what I was expecting in the first place.

Hanslow, was the adaptor that you got made to fit the Autometer sender yes? Do you have a number for the place you got it made?
I have the subaru part but the autometer sender doesnt quite fit it properly.

Ooops sorry dude, missed the last couple of posts
Yeah give em a bell, tell the woman it's for a Subaru Impreza and then she should know the bit you want. Whilst getting mine done, somebody was getting 50 made up!
She should have on record what I ordered (just give em my name and they might be able to find it!), but IIRC, it was an M18x1.5 adaptor with the 1/8" NPT female thread in it.

Just found my receipt! The lady to speak to is Fay (very helpful lady).
I ordered mine on 30/04/02 (think it's invoice number 1008 but I could be wrong).
The invoice says the product code is 912-M18-1/8NPT male to female adaptor and then in pen underneath is (MFA12-85-3). I'm pretty sure if you ask for an M18x1.5 adaptor with female 1/8 NPT thread in it and tell Fay it's for a Scoob she'll be able to sort you out.
