Apologies for the awful quality - my scanner is rubbish and I need a new camera. Thought better in here rather than gallery. Hope you end up with the right pictures and not the one of me wearing overalls (first time for everything) which Andy F (aka Cosie Convert) took
EGT Probe installation in manifold - Subaru kindly leave a little flat area to drill.
The horrible uppipe
The new Turbo Dynamics TD04L MD297 hybrid kindly supplied by Mark Aigin (R19 KET)
Note the clipped back blades on the exhaust side (hint the clean one not convered in NF octane booster is the new one )
...and the new compressor wheel (new one left above, bottom below)

Left the original uppipe on.
The left hand one in the first two turbo pictures is the new one, and in the last picture the bottom one is the new one.
Yes it was an improvement, but now I am waiting for a decent scrapyard VF23, have the new topmount on and will be fitting these SS headers/uppipe:

john,
just a quick note, because I notice you say dirty due to nf octane booster.
I was under the impression that millers caused this build up due to oxidation of manganese compunds, and that since NF doesnt use these for its ocatne boosting properties, it did not create the orange coating.
Did you mean millers? or is it possible that this turbo had been used with millers in the past?
I know it makes no difference, but I would be interested if I need to be corrected on something I believed to be true.

The car has only run SUL since new and then NF for the last few thousand miles. Never any other octane booster. The orange colour only appeared after the NF and it is now everywhere I look, so I assume this is it?

John, I know you have posted about this turbo before but I can't find the thread.
What gains did you get using it? Do you loose anything low down? Why the change to VF23?
I seem to recall you getting 300BHP with this turbo and also good torque.
Regards
Neal

Hi Neal, yes it was a while back but only now got the piccies. It is a good improvement and hangs on at least 1000 RPM later than the standard turbo for similar charge temps and boost. I have it running about 20 PSI from 2700 (so I don't lose much low down) to 5200 RPM and then it drops to 16 PSI at 6000 RPM and I tail it right off from there, all with respectable charge temperatures on the track with an upgraded TMIC.
I got about 290 BHP and 290 lbft at PE on a hottish day, but the mapping has moved on a fair bit since. I was pleased with 202 at the wheels and how low the torque came in. Hoppy was looking for 300lbft at 3000 RPM - I suspect I gave him about 280lbft at 3200 RPM with this turbo and a map running a safe 18 PSI, which is probably as good as it gets from an EJ20? But bottom end is nice, top end is nicer still
VF23 - for more top end power, lower charge temperatures and less back pressure, but I'll get a much higher boost threshold I know, and the MD297 is a nice road compromise.

John why don't you get a TD05 (like the ones that came on earlier WRX's), this is what Andy F. wrote about it:
I am pretty sure that it is even cheaper than the VF23, it is stronger and can produce more top end power.

I've had the Scoobysport uppipe on for a month now. I'm running 1.7 bar boost. EGT of 800 deg C and doing a bit of drag racing with it.
No problems whatsoever. Turbo spool up is also improved, my TD05 is producing over 1 bar at 2500 rpm. Full boost of 1.7 is showing by 2800 rpm.

stop being soft john... heres the instructions..
Get turbo..
Get hacksaw (larger the better..) or substitue with an angle grinder..
Remove 90degree inlet...
Machine out middle with a die grinder / milling machine / dremel / hammer and chisel or screwdriver)
Fit alloy tube in place.. weld / bolt / silicone seal / duct tape to seal
fit to car.. grin and laugh as its just cost you less than £200
did I mention to clean the crap out of the turbo?
David
Please be aware dw aka bodge it and scarper accept no responsiblity for **** in your turbo.. or fuked engines / turbos

I am mega-pleased with my TD04L hybrid turbo from mark (R19KET) and JB's Tek3 'safe' map to give a margin for hot track days. The drive home down the fabulous A7 was brill I was going too fast to see any Gatsos: awaiting the postman with some anxiety
Third gear is absolutely fantastic - the car is almost motorbike fast, and you really need big brakes and uprated suspension to avoid catastrophy While the turbo spools up fractionally slower than the stock item, it blows harder so I'm seeing slightly higher boost at slightly lower rpm than before, and obviously higher peaks. For £500 on an exchange basis, this turbo is a superb device.
But the power is addictive and I know that Mark has a bigger turbo and with a tweaked map, fancy headers etc, I could be well into the 300s on both torque and bhp. Trying to resist... Do I need an FMIC? Big pain in the @rse if I do.
Main points of this post are that a) I'm glad John's mapping is better than his photography, and b) when my stock UK00 turbo came off it was orange everywhere, but has been run on nothing but Optimax for at least 5,000 miles, with no octane booster of any sort.
Best,
Richard.
