You are missing my point.
I am aware that the space in your inbox is clearly displayed, but my question was....
My suggestion was, that when your inbox fills up, an automated email to the user of the inbox is sent, requesting that they delete some messages.
Then I won't get messages like this....

The following errors occurred when this message was submitted:
user name has exceeded their stored private messages quota and can not accept further messages until they clear some space.
